Following undergrad, I was unable to matriculate because of financial constraints. We were recent immigrants, and as an international student, financial aid was unavailable. To prepare financially for medical school prior to reapplication, I took a circuitous route that would also further my science and patient-care interests. After undergrad, I secured funding for a master's in mechanical engineering through the Department of Ophthalmology to work with low-vision patients and develop vision aids. By performing well, I maintained funding throughout the program. Since graduation, I have been working in PwC’s consulting practice, gaining broad exposure to industries like retail and foodservice. Though consulting demanded long hours, I remained

Upon completion of my undergraduate work, I will be pursuing a Masters of Business Administration, with a focus of healthcare administration. After the completion of my first year of graduate work, I intend to apply for a work-study position as a “Health Systems Specialist”, at the local VA facility. These work-studies are paid internships in which the department of veteran’s affairs trains and evaluates the competencies of prospective employees. Upon completion of the one-year work-study, I will be eligible for a non-competitive conversion to a permanent or term appointment within the VA health care system (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, n.d.).…

“You’re transferring schools, Karina!”, my mother exclaimed a week before my sophomore year. Ultimately, this was the last thing I wanted to hear. I kept trying to decipher whether the news was good or bad. Moving to a Medical Magnet school smelled like defeat, and I was not fond of change. Public school was my forte. I was adapted to crowded lunch rooms, lively classes, and having classes such as art, band, up to ROTC. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but there was something hidden behind my personal chaos. Overall, this life-altering experience is what shaped me into the dedicated pupil and aspiring health care professional I am today.…

I am not your traditional medical school applicant. I do not have a 4.0 at a fancy big U nor have I helped helpless African children fight malaria, which is a goal of mine, but I digress. I did not make the best choices when I was younger and did not realize my full potential until the age of 21. I attended a semester at a party school when I was 18 and convinced myself school was not for me, when in fact, it was just an excuse to coast by. I never challenged myself at the awkward age 16-20 years old. I waited tables, worked in a warehouse, and did part time labor-intensive work to pay the rent and bills. I did enough just enough to get by. However, when I was 20, everything came into perspective. I was at a party having a great time with my best friend; I was in Louisiana at the time and as they say, “laissez les bon temps rouler”, translated, let the good times roll. That quickly changed. My best friend had a 5-minute long seizure, as everyone looked dumbfounded around him; I quickly took action, put him on his side and called 911. After a couple hours in the waiting room, two doctors…

A couple of years after becoming a LPN, I applied to DePaul University’s Master entry program to further my education, and thereby became a full-fledged RN. My dogged persistence paid off. In one way it deterred me from getting stuck to cab driving, despite a very good tax free – income. On the other, it allows me to envision my future as a great nurse.…

One of my greatest accomplishments was graduating from the University of Northern Colorado with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in finance. While working a full-time job consecutively juggling school activities I completed my degree in three and a half years. I was encouraged by my grandfather who was once a Dean of Educational Services at Miami University and consequently had a long legacy of being a superior educator. Completing my degree and starting a career in Banking at Wells Fargo brought an abundance of pride to me and my family. Starting as a Teller I worked my way to becoming a Branch Manager in four years. After devoting ten years in Retail Banking I transitioned to Business Banking. Within six months I became a Business Banking Administration Manager, managing Business Banking Associates and operations among 5 different locations. Three years later I learned that a Business Banking reorganization was going to happen furthermore, I amongst numerous others…

Ever since I transferred to the University of Miami as an undergrad, I have had the gratification and honor to meet and work with various remarkable people, from physicians to scientists and staff. Doing research and shadowing at Miami Miller School of Medicine gave me the prospect to admire how marvelous the school and its community are. Furthermore, I have had the satisfaction to meet several professors who teach at the medical school and the prospect of learning from them is enticing. Being able to experience first-hand the compassion and care that the doctors at Miller demonstrate their patients have also confirmed that this school is not short of role models for me to follow. Additionally, I have met several students who have shared their…

As I have gained experience over the years working and volunteering in the mental health field, I have come to the realization that I have an overwhelming passion for working with individuals in need of social, emotional and physical support. If I were given the opportunity to become a DFPS Statewide Intake Worker, my greatest challenge would be ensuring that the children and adults in the home are receiving the appropriate love and attention that they need from their caregivers. As a family oriented individual, I believe that success begins in the home. My goal as a DFPS worker would be to help ensure that the people in need and their family can be successful, even in the most difficult situations. By successful, I am referring to the family receiving the support and resources they need from the community.…

I had finally been given the opportunity to continue my higher education at an American institution. I knew that this was the chance I had been waiting for: the chance to study dentistry in a country where oral hygiene is incredibly important. However, there were several hurdles along the way I needed to overcome. Initially, I was completely unaware of how the American education system operated. My poor background in the English language made it even harder to overcome this obstacle. To add to this stress, my father was diagnosed with acute arthritis in his neck; a cervical spine fusion in C6 and C7 was pinching the nerve in his right arm, which was causing it to go numb. He wasn’t able to work and went through an extensive amount of painful physical therapy. The circumstances made it harder for me to focus on my dreams. Unfortunately, I had to work fulltime while I was still a fulltime student in college, which was detrimental to my grades. However, I worked even harder and by the time I was a junior in college, I was maintaining dean’s list as a full time student, while working…

During the first year post graduation I need to take and pass my licensure exam in July. After I pass my licensure exam I hope to find a full time, part-time or PRN job at an acute care or a long term care facility. During this time I am going to be adjusting to my first job as a PTA, so I am not going to get any extra certifications at this time. It is going to be important for me to continue researching and learning about different types of diagnosis and patients I may have to treat so I am well prepared to give these patients the best PT experience possible. In order to do this, I will do research on patient with diagnosis I am unsure of. I would also like to continue to expand my knowledge of therapeutic exercises. In order to do this I will continue to research exercises online and on HEP to go, as well as learn from other PT and PTA’s I work with. During this time I would like to find a class on manual therapy to help me improve my manual therapy skills. To find a manual therapy class I will get online and look for courses, which there is some information online offered by Myofascial release treatment centers and seminars. I will just need to see if PTAs are…

Although I wanted to hear that I had been accepted to the program, I was also prepared to be rejected. However, I had not imagined the possibility of being waitlisted once more. In 2015, I applied to MED while I was still in college hoping to spend a summer learning about the dedication required to succeed in medical school. I was waitlisted and the spot for me was never created. Fast forward two years into the present and I have found myself in the same position. The program is the same, but my experience is utterly different in a variety of ways this year. Over the past two years I have had invaluable experiences that have solidified my resolve to attend medical school.…
