Introduction

In this assignment I choose to do my assignment on the Mariannhill Monastery, located in the outskirts of Pinetown. The Monastery was founded by Trappist Monks (religious order of the Roman Catholic Church) in 1882, as a catholic mission. The Monastery not only boasts beautiful architectural design but also peaceful tea and vegetable gardens. The Mission centre within the monastery is used for many different workshops, conferences and retreats for schools, religious organisations and private companies to discuss social problems such as HIV/AIDS, drug abuse and unemployment related problems. (marianhillmonastery.org.za)

I came to learn about Mariannhill Monastery through a friend who works for the Mariannhill mission press, a division of the Monastery that helps people be as effective as they can be in their work. The monastery helps all walks of with many different problems, like a massive centre of counselling, self-guidance and prayer. Social problems ranging from, HIV/AIDS, Drug abuse and unemployment, the monastery can be a place of guidance and retreat not only for the individual but also for organisations and companies looking to strengthen core values in the business.
When visiting a place like Mariannhill monastery for assignment purposes such as this one tends to go there looking for cracks in order to write some more substantial story about certain flaws that there may be and how they work around it in this modern day life, this was my initial assumption. After entering Monastery premises I began to feel as though maybe the hustle and bustle of everyday life is the crack that we all experience, the gardens seems to trap out most of societies sounds that we have become so use to and instead allows us to hear the earth. The simple act of listening and being submerged in such a peaceful and calming place could be seen as a form of counselling in itself, you become more aware of your

    5. According to Angela Y. Davis the hegemonic understanding of prisons that non-incarcerated people get via various media outlets is based on the portrayal of prisons as necessary institutions that simultaneously keep drug addicts, the mentally ill, and violent individuals away from society. In a sense, prisons operate as a filtration system that can remove or obscure the unwanted members of society in order to maintain social integrity and order.…

It is incredibly difficult to select only one of Saint Patrick’s practices in reaching the Celts because they are all so beautiful and effective. However, the way in which Patrick and his people set up Monastic communities and invited people to observe and participate in a new way of living—the kingdom of God way—is perhaps the most applicable for today. To this point, Hunter states, “The monastic communities invited seekers, refugees, and others, individuals and even families, to be their guests” (Hunter 41). This is a beautiful picture of the church (the people of God) opening up their lives so that others can observe kingdom living in their lives and homes. Conversely, some might assume that an hour on Sunday is enough observation for one…

Situated upon a small hill in Shatin, Tao Fung Shan is the perfect location for a missionary site. However, Tao Fung Shan struck myself, and undoubtedly any other new visitors, as its appearance does not reflect its Christian roots. Instead, the context was wholly Chinese with the buildings constructed in the typical Chinese traditional style. The gardens were in a typical Asian-Pacific style which involves having the garden enclosed within the outer walls as opposed to the surrounding the structures. The purpose of the mission was also highly interesting as the targeted audience of the mission were not laymen but instead, Buddhist monks and practitioners.…
