Qualitative Case Studies
Ward (1994) using interview methods in a qualitative case-study design, examined the special leadership practices of three elementary school principals while implementing the special education programs. The three principals, 2 to 3 of their regular education teachers and the entire special education staff were interviewed by the researcher and the field notes were also used the to complement the interview data. It was found that the principals had three types of leadership actions and beliefs. They were: one Principal showed value leadership, a second one demonstrated value-added leadership and the third principle demonstrated Value leadership along with strong value-added leadership traits. The value-added leadership actions that were centred
around the students’ needs included, (A) developing a caring attitude towards those students who had disabilities in the school community, and (B) promoting the participation of the community and the special education parent. The principals’ effectiveness in their involvement in special education was to a great deal influenced by the communication skills. Waudo Judith, Juna Magdaline and Herriot Andrew (2002) made a study which was focused on five issues namely primary school management, sustainability of head teachers’ management and development, impact on the school community’s involvement, reducing poverty and increasing economic prosperity. The researcher explored into the operation of 20 selected head teacher support groups (HTSGs ) and studied them. The data collection techniques that were used in the study were: focused group discussions (FGDs) ,in-depth interviews ,secondary documents and observation guides.. Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used for analysing the quality to data. It was scored in the study that there was poor representation of women in HTSGs. Frequent consultations on educational issues, between headteachers and respective communities were taking place in the schools. There existed networking among the head teachers.
