3. Using material from Item C and elsewhere, assess the strengths and limitations of using qualitative documents as a means of investigating suicide.
According to Item C, suicide is a difficult topic to study because those who commit suicide are not available tor research as they are already dead. However, they might leave behind certain qualitative documents such as suicide notes, diaries, blogs etc. This allows the coroner to investigate and interpret the messages and also compare them to previous suicide cases. However, there are often problems of access to qualitative documents. Such as, diaries are mostly kept personal or otherwise removed by family members. Also, not every person who committed suicide writes suicide notes, this leaves the coroner clueless to classify the death as a suicide. Besides, it is often difficult to find those who have attempted suicide in order to conduct comparisons and further investigation.
In terms of methodological perspectives, interpretivist would definitely favour the use of qualitative documents such as personal diaries because they contribute validity and authenticity to the relevant investigation. They are able to produce rich and deep insights about an individual through the notes written. This is difficult to achieve by using official statistics and other quantitative resources. However, they often lack confidentiality since informed consent is not gained from the dead person. Also, like what Item C has suggested, the resulting media interest can be very stressful for bereaved relatives and friends, particularly where a death is reported in an insensitive or inaccurate manner. We also could not ensure that the coroner is able to gain access to all documents since some of them are deliberately kept unrevealed. Hence, while qualitative documents provide credits and a good starting point for investigations, they however can raise certain ethical issues, which will cause detrimental effects to different parties.
Item C suggested that according to Samaritans, the majority of people who take their own lives have mental health problems, sometimes being diagnosed before the person’s death and sometimes not. This clearly shows that some qualitative documents produced are not as accurate since they might be influenced by emotional difficulties such as lack of consciousness. They also lack of hypothesis testing and difficult to generalize since every individual has their own distinctive reasons to commit suicide. However, sometimes, they are the only resource that could be used to investigate death, especially when the person’s physical injuries are not significant enough. Hence, we could say that there are various strengths and limitations of using qualitative documents as a means of investigating suicide. They should not be ignored but on the other side, they should be carefully assessed and interpreted before any conclusion is made.

Suicide is the act of intentionally killing oneself, the issue of suicide is widely studied by many different sociologists including the positivist scientific approach which focuses on identifying the causation of suicide through use of statistics and quantitative methods. Also the interpretivist approach which looks to identify the meanings attached to the action of suicide. For interpretivists, suicide is an interesting topic to study because sociologists can attempt to identify why the individual committed suicide to discover more in-depth meanings through the use of qualitative data. As shown in item A, Durkheim is a positivist sociologist and identified in his research that there are many different social causes which could result in suicide. As well as this, there has been recognised to be certain groups of people who may be more or less likely to commit. For example, Doctors, Dentists and Farmers are placed in the groups whom are most likely to commit suicide due to the fact they have access to the means to physically commit suicide (drugs, medications and shotguns).…

Durkheim was the first to study the social causes, or facts that he believed led to suicide, and these social facts are what shape humans’ behaviour and are external to the individual. He did recognise that some were naturally predisposed to committing suicide, but he argue that it was largely a social problem. However, many interpretevists contest Durkheim’s findings, arguing that the meaning needs to be investigated to find the causes of a suicide rather than a positivist approach, relying on scientific methods.…

All survivors, both family and peers, are at higher risk of suicide after their loss. Grief, guilt, despair, and modeling all contribute to this risk, as does the isolation that can sometimes follow because of the shame, discomfort, and stigma often associated with suicide. Although consciousness and preventive efforts (e.g., screenings) may increase following a suicide, the overall risk among surviving family members and peers is significantly increased nonetheless. The grief and other factors underlying this increased risk usually lasts for many months or even years, so the risk does not resolve in the weeks after the death. Regular contact to provide support and observe for indicators of risk should be continued for at least a year following the death and for even longer periods around the loved one’s birthday, family events, holidays and the anniversary of the loss, or if the risk has continued or independent risk factors exist. Most survivors feel isolated when their loved one is not mentioned. They usually want their loved one to be remembered, and talking about…

Suicide-related forensic assessment procedures are an important component of a forensic professional’s responsibilities in a correctional setting due to the excessively high occurrence of prison suicide as associated to the general population. Suicide is a major cause of death among prisoners and the assessment of suicide risk should not be viewed as a single opportunity at intake but rather an ongoing process (Weiner & Otto, 2013). An inmate can become suicidal at any point during their confinement therefore suicide-related forensic assessment procedures should begin at the point of transfer to the correctional facility and continue until the offender is released from custody. When conducting suicide-related forensic assessments there are…

James Tworkowski is the founder of TWOLHA, an organization that supports people suffering from depression, drug addiction and other mood disorders. To write love on her arms is an inspirational movement that began with a blog and a story. James had a friend named Renee who was a nineteen year old drug addict who suffered from major depression. She had previous issues with sexual abuse as a child and inflicted harm on herself as a coping mechanism along with the drugs. Her arms were covered in scars and she even carved the phrase “FUCK UP” in her arms. After being rejected from rehab, James gathered a support group and prayed for her. They helped her move forward, move past the years of pain and addiction. They saved her life with help, support and the spirit of god. “We become her hospital and the possibility of healing fills our living room with life. It is unspoken and there are only a few of us, but we will be her church, the body of Christ coming alive to meet her needs, to write love on her arms” (Tworkowski).
