Before she makes her final decision, Maria plans to explore the following questions independently except where otherwise indicated.
Q. 2) Maria is not very concerned about the taste of the casserole; she is only concerned about meeting nutritional requirements and cutting costs. Locate the weight of your prepackaged food items. (For example, on a box of Frosted Flakes it says 15 oz.) Add up all of the weights for your prepackaged items in ounces, and then add up all of the costs for your four prepackaged items. From the totals, find the average cost per ounce of prepackaged items. Convert your results to cost per pound. (Hint: How many ounces in a pound?) Now, compare the cost per pound of unprocessed food compared to prepackaged processed food. Discuss your comparison. Are you amazed or did you expect these results?…

The VP of Operations of Cadman Foods faces the decision of having to allocate three million pounds of tomatoes to the production of canned whole tomatoes, tomato juice or tomato paste. Subsequent to that decision, the VP needs to determine whether to acquire 80,000 pounds of additional “A” quality tomatoes at $0.425 per pound. Bill Cooper, the Controller at Cadman Foods has recommended that Cadman produce the maximum quantity of canned whole tomatoes based on Dan Tuckers assessment of the tomato crop. By logical extrapolation, this would result in the remainder of the crop being allocated to the production of tomato paste. Charles Myers, the Sales Manager at Cadman has recommended that instead, 2/3 of the tomato crop be used in the production of tomato paste while the remaining crop should be used in the production of tomato juice. Mr. Meyers arrived at his recommendation based on cost ratio derived on the basis of quality of tomato crop and marginal profit.…

Family dinners are served on selected evenings of the week at 5:30 PM. Groups should plan to serve 70-80 family members. A group size of 5-15 volunteers is appropriate. We ask our volunteers to understand that these numbers are strictly estimates. The actual number of people attending a given dinner varies greatly, even when the Tree House is at full capacity. This is due to a number of factors, none of which are predictable. We are therefore unable to provide a more accurate estimate. Bear in mind, that whether the food is eaten at mealtime or as leftovers, it will be very much appreciated.…

There are three production plants within AP’s manufacturing department; each plant is responsible for their own profits and losses. Unfortunately the managers have no control over any of the major activities in their respective production facilities; the vice president of the manufacturing oversees all of the roasting, grinding, and packaging processes. Production schedules are provided to each plant manager for the current and following month. The plant managers also have no control over the green beans purchase, production schedule, production mix, or the costs of their inputs, as the purchasing departing assigns the costs based on specific contract for that shipment. If the inputs exceeded plant’s requirements, they are sold at the spot rate in the market, and could very well result in a loss.…
