Research Methods and Statistics for Criminal Justice
Abstract
This essay will describe a research subject. The essay will discuss existing literature in regards to the subject. Variables that affect the subject will be explored. The methodology in which the research will be conducted will be revealed. The rationale of the methodology will also be provided. Lastly, annotated references will be included in support of the research subject.
Introduction There has been a growing concern over the past decade in regards to the increase of youth consuming alcohol. The use of alcohol by youth brings forth may risks: personal, health, safety, addiction and legal. For a young person avoiding legal risks associated with alcohol is extremely important. According to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program there were almost 1.7 million state and local arrests for alcohol and drug abuse violations in 2009 (www.ncadd.org, 2015). Recent studies have indicated alcohol use as early as eight years old in some states. In the schools there are alcohol prevention programs; however, students have to be willing to participate in these programs. One task of prevention is to determine which risk factor can be manipulated. Risk factors in regards to youth drinking include: ethnicity, cultural norms, availability, poverty, family practice, genetic factors, academic failure and peer pressure. A recent study indicated that among ethnic groups in the eighth grade, rates of alcohol use were more prevalent amongst Hispanic (Stigler, Nuesel & Perry, 2011). The rationale behind young drinking ages amongst Hispanic is it is socially acceptable. Another variable is family history which cannot be manipulated in a prevention program. It has been proven in research that a child of an addict has an increased chance of becoming an addict themselves if they utilize
