This paper will discuss two specific types of research methods those types can be identified as qualitative and quantitative. Often times many people get the two confused and believe the terms can be used interchangeably however that is not the case. I have always been a numbers person and for that reason I prefer quantitative. I prefer having the numbers available to determine what can be expected in the future. The reason I prefer this method is because you generally end up with data reduced to numbers where as qualitative you usually do not end up with numbers. Quantitative is typically used to support or expand on an existing theory where qualitative is used to develop a new theory that did not exist before.
The qualitative method entails gathering information that is not in numerical form. Some examples of collected information could be open-ended questionnaires, unstructured interviews and diary accounts. This data can be very descriptive and often times hard to analyze. Often times expert knowledge is required to interpret the data. Quantitative methods can be used to construct graphs of raw data. Closed questions or a rating scale provide quantitative data because it produces numerical data.
There are pros and cons to each type of research method. When looking at quantitative research methods some of the pros are that it enables one to determine the value of markets and in turn allows one to produce profit projections. Additionally the results that are obtained are reliable based on statistical data. When reviewing the pros of qualitative research methods it provides the possibility of discovering things are not known. This type of method can also identify lines that may be effective for promotional use.
Often times one must question whether the pros outweigh the cons. There are a number of cons for each research message. For the qualitative research method it can be viewed as very subjective and often times will require researchers who are skilled and experienced to collect unbiased results and interpret them. Regarding quantitative the there are a number of additional concerns that arise some of those are regarding a lack of in-depth understanding also sometimes will be left unlikely to discover new information if they have been overlooked. Both methods can be effective and the method used may very on the intended use.

When defining a problem or developing an approach to a problem, qualitative research is used when we don 't know what to expect. It is also used to explore issues related to the problem and deeper into issues of interest. Qualitative research methods are things like focus groups, triads, and bulletin boards. Quantitative is conclusive, as it tries to understand how relevant it is by looking for projectable results to larger population. In quantitative research data is collected through surveys, audits, and point of purchases. Since they both provide different perspectives and complement each other qualitative and quantitative should be used. Quantitative research is used to measure the incidence of various views, and opinions in a chosen samples, and is sometimes followed by qualitative research which is used to explore some more findings. In summary qualitative and quantitative approaches to research have different perspectives of situations. Qualitative…

A qualitative study addresses the complexity of human experience, focusing on the big picture (Rebar & Gersch, 2015); while a quantitative study breaks a problem down into small pieces and focuses on specific parts to see how they all relate (Rebar & Gersch, 2015). Qualitative methods focus on subjective information, and never try to predict or control the phenomenon of interest (Rebar & Gersch, 2015); on the other hand, quantitative methods focus on statistics and objective information, and can yield predictions and control (Rebar & Gersch, 2015).…

The most common classification splits the methods used in organisational and business research into two large groups, namely quantitative and qualitative research methods. Quantitative methodology incorporates methods that have been designed to facilitate research in the field of natural (physical) sciences. Therefore, the main mission of quantitative research is to ensure validity and reliability of study results (Dingwall et al, 1998). Examples of quantitative methods widely used in the social sciences and business and management research are survey methods, formal methods (e.g. econometrics), laboratory experiments and several numerical methods (e.g. mathematical modelling) (Myers, 1997).…

It can be defined as the art in the science of search for new knowledge through queries and analysis. The primary purpose of research is to achieve new insight for better familiarity, to know the accuracy of the available information, to determine the frequency of occurrence or to test causal relationship between variables (Godwill, 2015). Explaining frequently valid and relevant qualitative research designs and quantative research design in a given business situation, Descriptive research- Descriptions can be solid or abstract. A solid description may describe the ethnic mix of a state, the changing age of a demographics or the language connection in a workplace. Explanatory research- Targets on why questions. For example, it is one thing to describe the car rates in a state, to examine car rental rates over time or to compare the rates in different states. It is a different thing to come up with explanations about why the car rental rates are as high as it is and why some types of car rental store rates are rising or why the rate is higher in some states than in others. Using quantitative and qualitative research I would use both of these research methods to find for example: at Gap Inc. using these methods to find out the qualitative and quantitative of my stores shipment every week, after using these methods of research then my result will tell me how much shipment I received and the quality of jeans, pants, and shirts I have records of my merchandise I sell out of my store in detail.…

Qualitative research methods are complex meaningful analysis characterised by processes and meanings that are not experimentally examined or measured in terms of mathematical measurements (Lincoln, 2003; Sarantakos, 2005). Quantitative research however, relies and builds on mathematical procedures and methods, such as frequency, quality, amount and statistical procedure. This paper will compare and contrast both qualitative and quantitative research methods endeavouring to highlight differences and similarities between the two methods.…
