A.1 Interview with Mr Geoff Rosbrook (General Manager at Queensland Youth Orchestras)
1. What could be considered Queensland Youth Orchestras’ internal strengths and weaknesses?
An internal strength would include that Queensland Youth Orchestras has a unique flat organisational structure where a small administrative team has worked with a large number of volunteers, as administrators, librarians and stage managers, attached to each orchestra or ensemble. Another strength would be the organisation’s consistent reputation of both the high artistic quality of orchestras and administrative staff board over many years. The Old Museum, where the organisation is located, has also been an ideal venue for organisation activities, offering great synergy for shared resources by community arts organisation. The organisation has stable management with low staff turnover and strong broad spread of finance sources. These sources of finance include a high level of partnerships with sponsors, donors, guest ensembles, educational institutions, festivals, community organisations and presenting partners.

Though, due to the large involvement of volunteers, the work environment for limited paid staff can be very stressful due to high level of outputs. Because there are several young

Another opportunity would include that collaborations with the organisation are in demand throughout Queensland from schools, local councils and other community groups. However, Queensland Youth Orchestras must be selective as a consequence of the limited availability of musicians who have other school and university commitments. The organisation’s location at the Old Museum in Bowen Hills has high density residential accommodation and retail outlets that have significantly grown.     The Utah Symphony has proven its ability to generate substantial sums of Revenue with both performance revenues and by securing large sums of income from governmental grants along with generous contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. The Symphony’s ability to draw large crowds along with their demanding schedule length allows them to offer the community ample opportunities to participate.
