Quey Percussion Concert Quey Percussion Concert was a superb performance and a real pleasure to be at. Performed in Davis Hall of the Gallagher Blue Dorn Performing Art Center on April 12th, it featured Gene Koshinksi and Tim Broscious. Throughout the concert many different styles of music were used, this ranged from music he wrote to go along the silent movie La Sire ́ne ́ to a performance called Impressions of Chinese Opera. Both pieces were incredibly different, however they were both also very pleasing. As the lights began to dim and a hush fell over crowd. Walking out to what could be considered center stage was a man dressed in all black. He introduces the two performers, Gene and Tim, but never himself. An applause starts as he exits to his seat and the performers enter through the door. The first song is called As One which is a fairly new, original works, written by Gene Koshinki in 2007. Initially the marimba is used providing a steady backbeat while also new upbeat sounds. A second smaller marimba accompanied the first one complimenting the first’s sound nicely. This was an original created by the two performers together. Quite a few instruments were used in creating this piece such as a bass drum, xylophones, and symbols. The most interesting instrument was the center piece of the performance, a yellow with gold glitter drum shell that had its membrane gone which begs the question, is it still a membranophone if it has not membrane? To play the drum shell they used drum sticks and a violin bow which was a very interesting use for it. As they played they built up to a finale which could be compared to a fireworks finale where there is so much going on it’s almost overwhelming but pleasing at the same time giving a very nice
