Significance: Blanch was blaming Stella for abandoning her back at the plantation home. While Stella thinks that Blanche is overreacting, Blanche is trying to express her true feelings of agony to Stella and how these events have affected her life for the worse.

Significance: While Stella seems to be happy
and doing well with Stanley, Blanche sees him as a madman! She is trying to convince Stella that Stanley is not the ideal man to be in a relationship with. Blanche wants Stella to open her eyes and see what she sees.

Quotation: “Because of hard knocks on my vanity’s been give. What I mean is-he thinks I’m sort of-prim and proper, you know! I want to deceive him enough to make him-want me…”
Significance: Blanche is very self-conscious and is always observing her image and attractiveness. When Stella asks Blanche why she is so sensitive to her age, she says that if she is seen as too old, Mitch may lose interest in her. She is lying about her age to make her seem more attractive to Mitch.

Quotation: “What it means is I’ve never had a real good look at you, Blanche. Let’s turn the light on here.
Significance: Every time Mitch has seen Blanche, she has always tried to cover up something. He just wants to get a good look at what she truly is. However, the “darkness” seems to represent the secrets and lies Blanche is holding and when the “light”, meaning truth, is turned on, everyone will become clear.
