Quotes From A Thousand Splendid Suns
“I used to worship you . . . On Thursdays, I sat for hours waiting for you . . . I thought about you all the time . . . I didn’t know you were ashamed of me.”
(pg. 50 *Mariam’s last words to Jalil, her Father*)
In Part 1 of A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam is broken to pieces when she realizes her mother was right all along about Jalil being ashamed of her. He was scared that letting her into his normal life would affect his reputation which he did not want tainted. He did visit her occasionally though but would never bring her into town. This in turn lead to the death (suicide) of her mother and her being married to a man and sent far away by her dad’s wife's. Mariam brought dishonour to Jalil because of her Harami status. I think this tells the reader a lot of information, but one must read between the lines a little bit to truly understand. When Hamlet’s Mother utilizes the word “thou” she is not necessarily referring to her son, instead talking about someone else. On the other hand, when young Hamlet speaks with the word “you”, he is directly addressing his mother, and only her. Hamlet and his mother are sharing a little bit of tense conversations, and the audience is definitely privilege to that emotion through the tone.…

Mariam shapes the futures of Laila and her daughter Aziza. Throughout the novel, Mariam brings her wisdom from her childhood to Laila and Aziza. Mariam begins teaching Aziza verses from the Quran at an early age, saying that “it’s all [she] has to give [Aziza] … this knowledge, these prayers” (Hosseini 298). After Laila’s mother is murdered in a rocket explosion performed by the Mujahideen, she is still provided with Mariam who bestows the comfort of a mother despite the absence of her own. Mariam even refers to herself as Laila’s mother when they are in the hospital while Laila is in labor with Zalmai, saying that her “daughter’s water broke and the baby won’t come” (287).…

Her father, Jalil who had three wives decided to have sexual intercourse with Mariam’s mother (who was a housekeeper) and resulting in Mariam and her current illegitimate status. This causes great shame to Jalil which is reinforced by the quote: “She was being sent away because she was the walking breathing embodiment of their shame.” This shows that Mariam is unwanted and unloved because she is being cast away and has to suffer the consequences of her parent’s actions. When she marries Rasheed, she is at first apprehensive and misses her old life, but then she feels a kinship with Rasheed after realising he suffered similar sorrows and losses that she felt. However, when Mariam has seven pregnancies and miscarriages, Rasheed becomes cold and distant and increasingly violent towards Mariam. This violent behaviour escalates and reaches the climax when Mariam cooks rice for Rasheed. Mr. Stryver said this quote in chapter three during the trial of Darnay, who was being charged with treason, when Mr. Carton pointed out the resemblance between himself and Darnay. The significance of this quote is that the resemblance in physical appearance of Darnay and Carton is symbolic. It causes the jury to acquit Darnay because it's impossible to find him guilty by how Carton look so much like Darnay that anyone could have been the man that was transporting secret messages between France and England. It is symbolic because not only does this resemblance save Darnay's life during this trial, but it…

But, Jesus beheld them and said unto them, "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26 If I live to be one hundred years old, I will never understand why the quote "It is what it is" is so prevalent, frequent and so widely used! Any situation that we can't handle or change, when brought to God is in His Hands to do what only He can do!! Our life in Jesus Christ makes what is impossible to us, not only doable with Christ, but incredibly, extraordinarily and mind-boggling to see!!…

    1. Mother, monogamy, romance. High spurts the fountain; fierce and foamy the wild jet. The urge has but a single outlet. My love, my baby. No wonder those poor pre-moderns were mad and wicked and miserable. Their world didn’t allow them to take things easily, didn’t allow them to be sane, virtuous, happy. What with mothers and lovers, what with the prohibitions they were not conditioned to obey, what with the temptations and the lonely remorses, what with all the diseases and the endless isolating pain, what with the uncertainties and the poverty—they were forced to feel strongly. And feeling strongly (and strongly, what was more, in solitude, in hopelessly individual isolation), how could they be stable?…

    Quotes From Life Of Pi

To me the most interesting character in this book so far is Piscine or Pi’s dad, Mr. Patel. In chapter 8 (pages 31-39), page 35, “I heard two things at the moment: Father saying “Never forget this lesson” as he looked on grimly; and the bleating of the goat.” This scene really characterizes Mr. Patel and showing just how brutal the wild life can be. This was a very strong teaching technique at the time considering Pi was only 8 years old at the time. To see a Bengal tiger, maul a goat like that at 8 years old sends a very strong message.…
