Ove just simply wants to end his life, “All he wants is to die.”. However, he fails to do so because his neighbours continue to bother him, which ironically are who he wishes to get away from. “Why can’t these lunatics respect that?” (P.58). He wants to be left alone. Ove has an external conflict and a prejudiced attitude with everyone he meets, because he feels that the new generation is incapable of doing any work properly and he fears that the world is changing to quickly for him.

His pessimistic view in human morality was already present when he was young. “Houses were fair, they gave you what you deserved. Which, unfortunately, was more than one could say about people. (P.79)”.
Ove had built his own house, brick by brick. He decided to work at the construction site along with his night janitor shift. He is hard-working and an eager-learner. However, estate agents did not approve of his house because it contrasts and ‘mysteriously’ burnt it to a crisp, as Ove ignored all their calls and letters. Because of this, Ove started to develop a fear of lawyers and other “powerful people” which we see in earlier chapters. The fire had gone of hand and even spread towards their neighbor’s house. Ignoring all the anger and hatred he had for a slight moment, “He muttered, irritated, looking at his house a last time, instinctively calculating to himself how many hours it had taken him to build it.
