Many people want to believe they are the best and if they aren’t they should just give up. Derek Jeter once said “ there may be people who have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do - and I believe that.” This quote is known as one of the most inspirational quotes for athletes. Jeter’s quote has been applied to the lives of many athletes, especially Jessica Long, Babe Ruth, and himself. . It has affected those individuals in different ways and taught them different things. Each athlete has had a rough patch or difficulty in their sport(s) but they knew that they had to work at it instead of just giving up. That is what made these three good athletes.

Babe is just like every other athlete and makes mistakes, some minor and some major. Yankees lost the world series 4 games to 3, when Ruth attempted to steal 2nd in the 7th game with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and losing 3-2. He was called out which ended the Yankees rally. For this play Ruth came under a barrage of criticism (“Ruth, George Herman “Babe” 1894-1948”). This is probably one of the most important games of the season. This is the worst time to risk a steal when you are down and in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. We all know everyone makes mistakes but what Babe did was idiotic. His fans noticed that this mistake was idiotic and criticized him about it. Even after making a never forgetting mistake he still wanted to move on and become a better player. Something had to be done after Ruth's fall. After the disaster in 1925 Mrs.Ruth and Colonel Ruppert said Babe should get in shape before Spring training so that nothing was repeated. This idea worked and Babe boosted his average 82 points and won the Yankees another pennant (Mrs.Ruth 75). Babe didn’t know what to do to help him so his wife encouraged him to go see Colonel Ruppert. After they meet up they all agreed on the same idea. Babe went through with the plan and it showed in the next season. He worked to become better instead of just letting what everyone was saying about him get to his head. The first question asked Jessica Long was “ What is your opinion on Jeter’s quote”? She replied “ I agree with his quote because I believe if you look at Major League Baseball or other professional sports you will see that the people that are dedicated and work the hardest weren’t always the most talented when they were younger, they had to work at it to get better” ( Jessica Long). Jessica has a very valid point here. Most kids aren’t the most talented when they first start, they have to work to become a better athlete. Even in professional sports the players have to train and practice everyday to become better. They don’t get accepted onto the team and then don’t practice because it won't better them or better the team. Then she asked “What advice would you give younger athletes?” She responded “ My biggest advice would be to try as much as you can. I think a lot of kids right now are trying to specialize to soon which not only does it not help develop their skill set but also restricts them on what they are able to experience later on. I think if you focus totally on softball and your never tried anything else you never really know if soccer was really your thing”(Jessica Long). Jessica is stating that it is good to only want to do one sport and concentrate on it but it is also good to have an open mind. When you do a sport you can only want to do that sport but don’t overwork
