PARVANA

In the novel “Parvana,” by Deborah Ellis Parvana faces a lot of challenges because of the Taliban and their laws. The theme of family courage and hope are used throughout the entire novel and are demonstrated in different ways by Parvana, her family and her friends.

Parvana and her family are very close. Each member of the family has their own means and responsibilities within the household, Parvana is relied on by her family to dress up as a male, buy food, earn money, support everyone and survive relies. Mother and Nooria work together to clean the little house they have and make sure there are enough supplies to live off. Mother and Nooria’s controlling ways encourage Parvana’s responsibility to continue her Father’s role reading and writing letters. When father was arrested living conditions were hard, although mother disciplined them they still managed to show happiness and work together to change things for the better. Although Parvana and her family were going through a difficult time they still cared and helped each other to survive.

Nearly all the characters in “Parvana” show courage during the novel. Courage is shown throughout the novel by most of the characters in the book like when Parvana and her mother showed a lot of courage when they went to the prison to retrieve her Father. Another example of “courageous characters” in this novel is when Parvana and her family made the decision to turn Parvana into a male to support her family and help them to survive the difficult time that they go through in the novel.

Salva lived in Sudan, Africa, while Parvana lived in Kabul, Afghanistan. A big difference between Salva and Parvana is that, Salva was separated from his family and didn’t know where they were for a while, and Parvana went to the market everyday to work to support her family. Salva embarked on his journey alone, but Parvana lived with all of her family, besides her brother, who was killed, and her father (for a period of time), who was arrested by the Taliban. Despite these differences, Salva’s and Parvana’s lives were also similar. Both Salva and Parvana went to school, and while they were in school they both didn’t like it. After they were deprived of their ability to go to school, they both missed it and wanted to go back. Because Salva was forced to live alone for most of his life, he was very independent. Similarly, Parvana had to protect herself and make her own decisions while she was at work. Salva and Parvana both made friends throughout their journeys. Salva became friends with Mariel and Michael; Parvana met up with a girl named Shauzia who she knew from school, and they became fast friends. In some cases Salva and Parvana had very different stories, but in others their stories were very…

While it defines physical courage, it omits inner courage which can be argued to be much more valuable to posses. Webster’s New World Dictionary describes courage as “an attitude of facing and dealing with anything recognized as dangerous, difficult or painful, instead of withdrawing from it”.…
