Race And Ethnicity Sociology
Sociology is the study of the development, structure and functioning of human society. Since the beginning of the US Census in 1790, people have been classified into racial groups. The methods of measuring race and ethnicity have changed many many times. For instance, in the early days the census used slave as an alternate to a racial category. The only race options were free white person, slave, and all other free persons. As the years progress more options were added, Asian groups like Chinese, Japanese and Filipino were listed since the late 1800s. Yet, American Indians were not listed as a race until 1870.
