Race And Racial Intolerance In The Film: X-Men First Class
For my movie, I picked X-Men First Class. The movie follows how the start of X-Men began via Erik Lancher and Charles Xavier. In the film, the villain Shaw, a mutant, is trying to start World War 3 in hopes of causing mutant dominance. The social justice issue related to this film is race and racial intolerance.

The mutants at this time of the world, are hidden, and not known for fear of how the dominant members of society would react. The mutants are essentially a minority group within the world. There are two views presented within the movie, one by Xavier that mankind would receive mutants with a more compassionate arms and Eriks view that mutants would not, "What started as a covert of mission, tomorrow mankind will know mutants exist.

over time Malcolm X's views on how to handle conflict changed; his violent retaliation eased up after converting to Islam. Yet, Dr. King's views never faltered: never resorting to violence. In comparison, the characters of this film made similar changes as well. Although Mookie parallels tactics of Dr. King, towards the end of the film his action of throwing a garbage can into Sal's storefront resembles tactics of Malcolm X. This fluctuation in Mookie's tactics further strengthens the concept that racial and social conflict can be complex and fluctuate at…

Racism has existed throughout human history, ever since the western world got in contact with people of darker skin-color in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Everything from trade slavery, national regimes and ideologies through the years have played a role in the creation and substantiation of racism. Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another. Racism is treating other people badly or hate on them just because of their characteristics such as skin colour, culture, religion, place of birth, or language.…

‘X-Men’, as previously mentioned, is based around a group of people who have mutated due to the presence of the ‘X-Gene’, giving them super-human powers. These ‘mutants’ are discriminated against by society, and find refuge with Professor Xavier in his Westchester Mansion. Many mutants come to the mansion to learn how to control their powers, and also to get a standard education as they are not able to go to a normal school for fear of the prejudice they would experience. Some of the older mutants are recruited by Xavier as the ‘X-Men’; a group designed to show the world that mutants aren’t a threat to society and can even be heroes. However, there are a group of mutants who make creating this image a challenge as this group, led by ‘Magneto’ (a survivor of the holocaust), use their powers to exact revenge on humans for their discrimination, even believing themselves as better than humans. Thus the eternal struggle between Xavier’s X-Men and Magneto’s ‘Brotherhood’ continues.…

The theme of this movie is that we should treat everyone with equal respect, regardless of their skin color or race, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, or religion. We should accept everyone for who they are, rather than trying to change them. It also shows the integration of a racist America into a culturally accepting society with the help of a teacher/coach.…

"Remember the Titans" is a parable about racial harmony, yoked to the formula of a sports movie. Victories over racism and victories over opposing teams alternate so quickly that sometimes we're not sure if we're cheering for tolerance or touchdowns. Real life is never this simple, but then that's what the movies are for--to improve on life, and give it the illusion of form and purpose.…

Without a doubt, Malcolm Little has been considered as one of the greatest and most iconic African American writers in our history. He is best remembered for the fortitude and passion he presented during all of his speeches, and his heritage has moved through the generations as the source for various kinds of books and documentary films. He desired to get his messages out to the world, even by using radical methods such as calling white people devils, applying anger and preserving his own beliefs. In this essay, a comprehensive life story of the talented African American writer, during the time of harsh prejudice and racial discrimination toward Africans, will be described.…

Storey (2009) clarifies on page 167 that there is only one human race and within that human race there are different divisions of “races”. In addition, race can be used as a sign or meaning, and also show the importance by taking certain actions. Certain movies and cinema can reflex the significance of race and multiracial and multiethnic dimension, by depicting them either working together or against each other towards a common goal or outcome. Storey states we need to understand that ‘race’ and racism are not natural occurrences; they are a result of human actions and interactions (Storey, 2009, pp. 168).…

History shows that racism wasn’t completely irradiated once the Civil Rights Act was signed. Glenda in our interview says this about the prejudice of Chicago while she was growing up, “there were always places you couldn’t go and boundaries because of racism” . Ambalavaner Sivanandan in his article said this about how blacks faced racism in the 80’s “we were a community and a class, we closed ranks and took up each other’s struggles. We had such a rich infrastructure of organizations” . The city Chicago today was not the same as the city of Chicago of the 70s and 80s. In that time period, racism and prejudice were heavy because some whites still didn’t desire to see blacks as equal. Showing discrimination illegally now like showing poor service…

Cofer’s passage reminded me of the many stereotypes that exist in popular culture today. Contrary to popular belief, electing an African American as President of the United States does not mean that racism is dead. Furthermore, Hispanics are not the only victims. While Cofer focuses mainly on the more obvious forms of racism, I’d like to call attention to the more subtle mentions. For example, recently I read an article for a class that discussed the racism faced by Middle Easterners in the United States. In the article, the author blamed popular culture for proliferating negative stereotypes. The Disney movie “Aladdin” was utilized as an example of such racism. Such racism can be seen in the lyrics of “Arabian Nights,” which states:…

The name of the movie I have chosen is The Outsiders. The reason why I chose this movie is because it was one of my favorite movies to watch when I was in middle school. I remember in middle school that I was in a reading and writing class where the teacher provided students several books to read together as a class and The Outsiders was one of the novels. I always had an issue with reading since I was kid even today in college because I have a reading comprehension disability where I have a hard time remembering what I read as well as having trouble pronouncing words. This was such an awesome book and for the first time I was able to understand the whole story. The whole class actually enjoyed reading this book. Whenever the class finishes…
