He was killed for flirting with a white woman. Till saw how much more segregated things were in Mississippi than in Chicago. Till told his negro friends that he had a white girlfriend back in Chicago. They did not believe Till and dared him to flirt with Carolyn Bryant, the girl behind the store counter. Till was later stripped, beaten, and tied down in the river by two of Bryant’s white family members. Race relations is different in different places, just like how it was more hostile in Mississippi than in Chicago during the time of the Emmett Till case in 1955. It seems like it became much more hostile between 1930’s with the Scottsboro boys court case and in 1955 with Emmett Till being beaten to death. By 1961, race relations changed even more between blacks and whites but began to get better than in the year prior. Davis lawsuit took place. This was a lawsuit over whether or not same-sex marriages were acceptable. Kim Davis, Rowan County Clerk, thought that same-sex marriages were wrong and against her religion. Davis was so against same-sex marriages that she decided she would not give out any marriage licenses. According to ACLU,Americans United for Separation of Church and State, “Davis refused to allow her office to issue marriage licenses to any couple, be they same-sex or different-sex. Davis stated that her religious beliefs forbade her from giving marriage licenses to same-sex couples, so she would not give out any marriage licenses at all (“Lawsuit”).” Same-sex marriages have just recently become a public issue. Twenty years ago, people would have never thought about marrying somebody of the same sex. In today’s society people have decided to fight for what they believe in and the courts have decided it is legal to have the same sex marriages.
