First, she explains what parathion is and what it is used for. In her explanation she says that it is a "deadly poison..to control concentrations" of particular animals such as pests. But, that it is used wrong and kills masses of "birds distasteful to farmers."

The words in paragraphs ten through twelve showed a lot of emotion. The overall tone of the passage is very pragmatic and frank. The author used many robust words that really set the tone of those paragraphs. For instance, for an example of pragmatic, paragraph twelve states, “He was outraged by the innkeeper's greed and deception.” The word outraged shows how disgusted and livid he was with the innkeeper’s actions. Another example is in paragraph twelve, “The farmer thanked the lawyer for his cleverness and happily returned home.” The word “happily” reveals that the farmer was very pleased with the conclusion of the case in the courtroom. Animated would be a good tone to describe this sentence. Frank tone in the passage is shown in paragraph…

Rachel Carsons central argument of this passage deals with focusing on the negative factors "Parathion" can produce. She uses rhetorical devices such as ethos, rhetorical questions, and visual imagery all to persuade the reader that Parathion is harmful. The first part of the passage uses ethos to appeal to authority. Carson states, "The Fish and Wildlife service haas found it necessary to express serious concern over this trend, pointing out that parathion treated areas constitute a potential hazard to humans, domestic animals, and wildlife".…

The combinaries of her serious tone, with the addition of ethos does, indeed, get her point across immediately. In additional, Carson continues to weave her serious tone in the second paragrah. This is seen when she includes that the "casualty list included some 65,000 red-winged blackbirds and starlings." Carson does add to the determined tone but she also introduces a mixture of logos and pathos. The statistic, "65, 000 blackbirds and starlings", is an example of logos that proves to the reader that the parathion is immensely hindering and impacting the wildlife in Southern India. The rhetorical strategy, pathos, is seen when Carson proclaims that the additional wildlife affecyed, rabbits, raccoons, and opossums "perhaps never visited the farmers' cornfields were doomed by a judge and jury who neither knew of their existence nor cared." This makes the reader feel pity and a sense of melancholy because other living, breathing creatures were , etc with such a devastating fate, death. Lastly, Carson ends the second paragraph with a hyperbole when she states that farmers "waged their needless war on…

The Obligation to Endure is the second chapter from the book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Carson presents the persuasive argument that pesticides such as DDT should be kept away from our homes, our place of business, and our children. In the 1950s and 60s DDT was a very popular pesticide that was commonly used. The hazardous effects were unknown. Carson expresses her founded concerns about the adverse risks and toxicity associated with these pesticides using logical, emotional, and ethical appeal. This is demonstrated in the quote, “ Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surfaces of the earth without making it unfit for life?”…

All of the test case studies have been inconclusive in their findings of such ill-effects. However, the agency did report that there would be a significantly high number of cases of Malathion related illnesses with only four of those that might become fatal. In addition, because of Malathion is toxic to organisms on water, applications directly to bodies of water is avoided at all costs. The fact that Malathion degrades so rapidly makes its application a low health risk to citizens and wildlife. Of course with any pesticide exposure to extremely high doses can cause death. A person exposed to a low dose may have no symptoms where as high dose may result in illness. In addition, Malathion has not been reported to pose any “unreasonable risks”. So, there is less fatalities of using the Malathion that we can try to prevent, than not using it and having the West Nile…

Currently before the Genericville city council is a proposed pesticide application program to reduce the mosquito population. The current pesticide of choice for this is Malathion. Government studies indicated that long-term environmental risk from Malathion application was unlikely because the pesticide degrades to harmless materials rapidly after application. These findings come from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, (2005, Section 1). There could be 90 cases of Malathion-related illnesses from the proposed application program. But there could be many more without the application. Malathion applications can be controlled safely. But the mosquito population would prove to be harder without the…

Malathion shows little cause of increased likelihood to adverse health effects. Compared to other organophosphate insecticides Malathion has relatively low toxicity to humans, other mammals, and birds, which is why Malathion is the preferred method used to kill mosquitoes and prevent West Nile Virus (Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry, 2007). All the residents will be informed of the dates of application as well as the rate of exposure they will encounter should they go into the areas of direct application.
