60 Minutes Again “Tonight on 60 minutes” are the words I hear in the background and remind me why I enjoy reading current events on a daily basis. Watching the news source programs and reading up on current events is my opportunity to recognize worldly events that affect my family and my livelihood. The significance of why reading and writing are so important in our daily lives. My Grandpa’s love for reading newspapers and watching evening news programs has inspired me to read the newspaper and read news websites. I remember as a child hearing these dreaded words from my mother: “Get your coat. We are going to Grandma and Grandpa Brose’s”. During my childhood my grandparents lived minimally with a TV that had rabbit ears, and 4 channels. One of Grandpa’s favorite channels of which every Sunday was set on 60 Minutes, which by then Grandpa had finished his evening supper and read the Sunday paper again for the fourth time that day. Grandpa would always hand me the comics and be sure he pointed out the ones he found to be the funniest, or find the articles that featured someone our family knew. Articles about grandkids or with the student’s names from the school he worked for were by far his favorites to read. 4-H events, sporting events, community spotlights are all the places he would read to find his “celebrities”. In his eyes the celebrities were his grandkids, students, friends and family members who were recognized in the articles. As the news started he would tell anyone that interrupted his hearing of the news to “be quiet, I’m watching the news” or he would just turn the TV up louder. In that case you knew he meant business, if Grandpa had to get up from his chair to turn the up the volume you now have upset him and that was never a good thing.
