Racial Beliefs In Remember The Titans
Remember the Titans is a film that is based on the racial beliefs of the 1970’s and how those beliefs impacted the integration of schools. The movie centers on a high school football team, the Titans, and how their team overcame racist beliefs. The team was everything to the people, but once the school had to integrate people became hostile. An African American coach, Coach Boone, took the coaching position from the white head coach Bill Yoast, and many people found that unbelievable. Yoast becomes Boone’s assistant coach and later Boone plans a trip to a camp in Gettysburg to challenge his players. At the camp the players undergo grueling training, but this training brings the players, no matter the race, together and helps unite them. The movie depicts the struggles African American students faced during this time, and how though they were moving toward equality they still received extremely harsh comments and were treated unfairly. Another historical event includes the Civil Rights Movement. The head coach of the Titans football team, Coach Boone, united the team despite racial tensions and his actions reflected the spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. The movie also highlights segregation and how strong people's beliefs in it were even after schools began to integrate.
