Racial Discrimination In The Media
What occurs in public is more than often presented in the media, without further explanation or opposing views. Similar incidents may occur, but race will play the factor of how the case is carried out. Trayvon Martin a seventeen year old African- American who was a victim of stereotyping due to the color of his skin. He was walking through a neighborhood with a hood on at night. Apparently, he looked suspicious, so instead of staying away like orders were given, Zimmerman shoots Trayvon and calls it self-defense. All of this could have been avoided if Zimmerman didn’t carry a perception that all black men were criminals or bad individuals. “While Zimmerman was armed with a gun, Trayvon met Zimmerman with only a cellphone, a bag of skittles, and a can of tea to shield himself” (Bell 89). He didn’t resemble no harm, but the color of …show more content…
Dylann Roof was responsible for the Charleston Church killing. Roof, walked into a black church where he sat with the pastor and couple members. He then proceeded to kill nine innocent people saying it was because they were black. As soon as the media began to cover the storyline they sugar coated his actions and labeled him as mentally unstable. When he was the one that made it clear that it was a racial thing. Furious as any other community would be, the Charleston community decided to march for equality, but the media reported that they were read to riot and authorities can dressed as if they were ready for war. As they captured Roof, he was instantly offered special treatment and was taken out of his house with a bullet proof vest to secure his safety. The officers when took him through the Burger King drive-thru since his demeanor was proper according to them. But when Sandra Bland was taken in to jail for a minor traffic violation, she was pronounced dead even on her mugshots. If race was switched there would be different outcomes for both

That these questions are likely to go unanswered in court of law is thanks to Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which places the threshold for self-defense so low that you need little more than your word to show that your life was in danger. Zimmerman’s description of events was enough for the police, who evidently feel they know all that they need to know to determine that Zimmerman should be free to walk the streets while Martin’s family mourns. The crime of killing a black person still is not greater than the crime of being black. And, as one of the family’s attorneys asked, “Do we really believe that if Trayvon Martin had pulled the trigger, he would not have been arrested?” We know that being a black man in America is a life-threatening occupation, whether you’re a 22-year-old in Oakland or a 13-year-old in Chicago or a 17 year-old in Orlando. The characters change, but the script remains the same. When everyone has had their say, another young black man has been killed for doing nothing more than being a young black man. What we don’t yet know is what it will take to get justice for Trayvon. A wonderful thating that started was the signing of the Change.org petition started by his parents calling on Florida’s 18th District State’s Attorney to prosecute Zimmerman. Trayvon is dead, and black men everywhere live in constant fear they could be the next…

    Media Bias Hum/111 Week 3

The importance of making critical evaluations of news stories come to play in the recent story about the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman case. This is a story about a young black teenager and a neighborhood watchman that shot and killed young Trayvon. Many news stations reported the story showing pictures of both of them that had been taken years prior to the actual event. Trayvon’s pictures showed him as an innocent boy and Zimmerman as upset and angry in a much earlier mug shot. The media also showed bias to both these individuals and seemed to be concerned with sensationalism, rather than finding out the true facts in the case. The concern they showed at the time the story broke, appeared to be geared towards selling the story and building the story into a racially motivated incident. The news was not completely clear or accurate and the investigative methods were not sufficient in either depth or breadth. The stories promoted the idea that Trayvon was an innocent young black kid who just happened to be out late at night and that Zimmerman was just looking to act as judge, jury and executioner. The pictures of George Zimmerman seemed to promote prejudice and negative emotions from the audience. They used bias in the news by deliberately ignoring more current pictures of both these individuals. Many of the news channels seemed to deliberately ignore the truth of the story regarding what type of people both Trayvon and George were. A mug shot of a younger angry looking Zimmerman and a more recent picture shows Zimmerman in a dress coat and tie with him clearly smiling shows a distinct disregreard for truthful reporting and bias in reporting. The news clearly chose to ignore any alternative perspectives in regards to this story. The stories focused on accusing Zimmerman of being an angry, trigger happy watchman who took it upon himself to deliver justice without waiting for the police to show…

"The verdict is in. The jury has spoken. The death of Diallo, a hard working African immigrant, was adjudged a terrible accident. Not murder, not manslaughter. Louima's assailant is in jail. Two of the officers who beat King went to prison. There have been commissions, investigations, demonstrations, public reaction, prater vigils, op-ed pieces, television segments, classroom dialogues. And so Americans ricochet from event to event, speaking of reasonable doubt and prosecutorial competence and ignoring the big picture, the real thing, the most important issue in this county that we try not to talk about. That is, race."(Anna Quindlen)…

In the SALON article, White Killers Go To Burger king: Race, Planned Parenthood and our diseased white privilege, Chauncey Devega writes about the sickening hypocrisy of how white perpetrators of mass killings are treated by law enforcement in the United States. Devaga uses examples such as how the Planned Parenthood shooter Robert Dear and the Charleston Church shooter Dylann Roof were treated by police as they were arrested. All of these mass murderers were apprehended by police alive and safe. Dylann Roof was even brought to burger King after his arrest. Devega contrasts this with the injustices that black Americans face on a daily basis. For a black American, even the most mundane interaction with a police officer can have deadly consequences.…

The New York Times wrote an article on the case and stated “Mr. Brown’s Body had been in the street for more than two hours.” (NY Times) Tom was burned alive and killed in the middle of street just as Mike Brown was killed in the middle of the street. The mob that killed Tom can be classified as the police officers that get away with murdering unarmed black children. “A disproportionate amount of African-Americans were targeted for traffic stops and other low-level violations; the police relied too heavily on the use of force (almost 90 percent of ‘unnecessary force).’” (Chaney & Davis) This leads me to ask why do police feel the need to use excessive force with African-Americans? Is it the same reason that the mob decided to use fire instead of a fistfight with Tom? Does being black in America give non-people of color a reason to believe African-Americans are genetically criminals? As we examine the facts, we remember that Tom was the victim that was harassed and then used self-defense that escaladed in the death of Bob Stone. This is similar to the story of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon was harassed by George Zimmerman, then preceded to protect himself by using self-defense, however Trayvon did not succeed in protecting himself against Zimmerman and his gun. In all of these instances, a family…

In recent news, there has been much talk about the Ferguson racial issues. Ferguson, Missouri has become infamous for its recent riots and protests. An African American teenager named Michael Brown was shot and killed by a white police officer. What happened on the night of August 1st is Officer Wilson was notified of a robbery and pursued Brown in his vehicle. Wilson came across Brown and was able to stop him with his car. There was a confrontation that Wilson allegedly fear for his safety and felt the need to discharge his firearm. After and foot chase, the police officer took down Brown with a fatal shot. The after math of this caused many protests and riot among the black community. Many people claim that the officer did not need to shoot the teen. The court decided that Officer Wilson was not guilty and caused an uproar within the Ferguson community. The author of the recent article attempts to explain the cultural differences between their white and black community and why these mistakes could be made. The main problem here is that the white and black communities simply do not understand each other. In the author attempt to prove this, he analyzed a series of tests to explain why many people can be confused in interracial issues. When people before the test claimed that they “do not see color”, it proved to be wrong. In fact, when a child is born, at about three months of age they understand the concept of race and they will prefer to be around their own race. This is means that there is still a form of racism. We cannot deny the facts that human beings have different cultures and unique trends within each race. Having said this, it also does not mean that noticing these things make certain people racist. The problem occurs here when a certain racial group tries to say that they are above another group. Profiling is the main way this is done in the instance like the shooting in the…

    Trayvon Case

This article really stood out to me because it showed the other non-biased view of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman’s case. It is apparently alleged that Zimmerman, a self-acclaimed neighborhood watchman, who carried a weapon, saw Trayvon, followed him in his car and asked him what he was doing. Trayvon answered with “why are you following me”, and a fight ensued. As they were fighting an unarmed Trayvon yelled “Help, Help, Help” as Zimmerman cocked his gun and shot Trayvon in an apparent struggle. What really stood out to me in this article is how Trayvon was pleading for Zimmerman, a 28 year old Florida resident to stop beating him up. Another thing that stood out to me was that Trayvon was only 17 years old. I wondered to myself why a 28 year old followed and beat up a 17-year-old boy. Some say Zimmerman a Hispanic was racist against African Americans leading to the question did Zimmerman purposely shoot and kill Trayvon because he was black?…

Racial tension and gun violence has been present throughout the history of the U.S., but it has recently been given a spotlight in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The young African American teenager was visiting his father and went out to the gas station to buy food, while on his way back, he felt like he was being watched and followed. After he decided to run, Trayvon was "confronted, shot, and killed near [the home he was residing in]." Gunman, George Zimmerman, frequently notified the police on many accounts. He supposedly noticed someone "suspicious" in his neighborhood, and Trayvon Martin happened to be that suspicious individual. His murder was evidently a hate crime, due to all the police reports that state that a majority of the suspected individuals Zimmerman spotted were black males. This case acted as a stimulus for people to reunite and attempt to make some change. Many people began losing trust in the system and acknowledging the…

In the United States today, there are many debates about the crimes against African Americans that are being committed by police officers. For years there has been a worrying amount of news stories about police officers shooting unarmed African American males with little to no provocation from them. These shootings have led to massive outcries from the citizens of the United States as well as created movements such as "black lives matter." These groups want to see a change on how police officers are trained and for racial profiling to stop. One of the cases that added the fuel to the fire is Randall Kerrick versus Jonathan Ferrell.…

The article “Trayvon Martin’s Legacy” by the Editorial Board of the New York Times (July 14, 2013) criticizes the case of George Zimmerman who was found not guilty for killing Trayvon Martin. The New York Times claims that this verdict is more related to racism, the Stand Your Ground law, and restricted of gun control. They specifically argue that this country is still afflicted by racism about which has been disappeared since long time ago, but in reality it is still there. According to editorial board, it has been such a terrible years for government to control the gun.…

With the recent not guilty verdict in on the case of the murder of 17 year old Trayvon Martin, many people in America are wondering what is going on. Just over a week ago a jury concluded that George Zimmerman was not guilty of the murder of the unarmed African-American teen Trayvon. This has caused quite the controversy once again within this country over the matter of race. Many believe that George Zimmerman racially profiled Trayvon Martin the night he allegedly stalked and in the end killed Martin when confronted while he was performing neighborhood watch duties. Many African-Americans and a few other races to include Caucasian white Americans blame it solely on a race issue but others such as mayor Michael Nutter from Philadelphia is looking at the race issue in another way.…

I listened to the audiobook version of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness and as I listened I walked through the streets of Boston. One night as I listened to Michelle Alexander talk about how African American men are far more likely to be stopped and searched by the police, I came across two Emerson Police Officers forcing a black man to the ground. He knelt down with his hands in the air as they patted his body down. Maybe he had done something do deserve this treatment, or maybe he had just looked like a criminal because of the color of his skin.…
