American to not confuse people. When I read about what his father went through, I can see why he choose not to be Latino because of the hate he received due to his skin color. Just like in the U.S, they share a common thing which was the Jim Crow laws. He also didn’t know how to speak Spanish but his father did. In this community, language is important on showing your nationally, but some participants choose not to speak Spanish or didn’t know how to speak Spanish. Another story that caught my attention was about the lady who spoke Spanish in front of people who thought she didn’t speak Spanish. People assume that she didn’t speak Spanish, so they would talk behind her back in Spanish. While reading this, she basically proves these people her Latino side. You never know a person identity until you know about them, so language is indeed important factor in establishing a nationality. I agree with Shona Brown that Black Latinos should be recognized in the Latino community. People should be proud be of their heritage. While reading this, I can tell that the author wants people to know what conflicts these people go through in their daily life. People with two or more ethnicities should be happy with their identity instead of being someone who they are not.
