Racism Against African Americans: Then And Now
Racism Against African Americans: Then and Now

Racism: the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or

ability and that a particular race is superior to others. Racism against African

American’s has been seen throughout many decades and has changed the way that

we as individuals view one another. Even though some may not think that it has

come a long way it really has changed a lot over the years.

Racism dates back to as early as 1377. The first sign, or what we think to be a

sign of racism was written and said by a man named Ibn Khaldun. Mr. Khaldun

stated that “blacks” are equivalent to and should be looked at as just another dumb

animal. Following Mr. Khaldun’s remark against African Americans in the 1600s,

Frederick Douglas was born right in the heart of racism and slavery. Douglass tried

to free himself and escape from slavery twice before he succeeded. He later went on

to speak on abolition but slavery only worsened through the coming years.

Even though slavery was abolished in the early 1900s, times were worse

then in the 1800s. African Americans were forced to live in separate communities,

drink from different drinking fountains, get food after the whites and finally the

blacks were forced to go to different schools. The term for this type of treatment

came to be later known as segregation. Some more examples of segregation include

separate entrances to buildings, separate drinking fountains and blacks were made

to sit in different sides of buses. During this period there were also

An example of that is in sports where just this past year a racist

remark came out of the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers (Basketball Team) Donald

Sterling. It was a large enough controversy that he ended up losing the team. Where

most of us don’t see this during our day-to-day lives there are still many problems

that arise because of some people who still exude signs of racism. One example of

this is during the “Hero of Civil Rights Movement” of 2010 one individual shouted

the “N” word at the representative. Also there have been multiple cases of people

wielding racist signs and spitting on African Americans during events, etc. There

has even been a song written trying to offend other races and just throw them under

the bus. We are still surrounded by racism everyday. One fact of racism in present

day is according to a study blacks are around 5 times more likely to be showed in

violent movies and get paid less than a white person even though they may have

even had a much bigger role in the play, movie, etc. In this same study it was proven

that black mug shots are around 4 times more likely to be shown and used in

The amount of racism that still goes on today is sickening. People just can’t get along and too soon it turns into violence. Everyday, people get killed because they’re a certain color that others don’t like. For example, an African-American man got dragged by the back of a truck by three white men just because they hated black people. The black guy was innocent and did nothing wrong but these white men didn’t care.…

Frederick Douglass felt so strongly about abolishing slavery that he went to talk to the then president (Abraham Lincoln), and he also wrote a book about being a slave. However when he wrote this book, it became very popular almost immediately, so he was forced to flee to Europe before he could be arrested and put in jail. Frederick Douglass also had a close relationship with Abraham Lincoln which he used to his advantage, so he went and talked to Abe Lincoln and persuaded him to let African American’s fight in the Civil War. But why? He would have speeches, write newspapers, write books and do many other things to bring attention to slavery and segregation. He inspired many whites and changed their minds about treating blacks differently. In 1861 Frederick Douglass talked with Abraham Lincoln about freeing slaves and how they would do it. That started the Civil War. When the war ended in 1865 slaves were free. That didn’t solve all problems though. Blacks were still getting treated differently. Douglass didn’t give up. He continued to fight for the freedom of black people. Frederick Douglass was successful in stopping slavery but now he was faced with a new problem, blacks were being treated differently than whites. Blacks would get beaten, stoned, tortured, etc, and most police refused to protect blacks. Some policemen would even join in. The blacks had to drink from separate water fountains, use different bathrooms, and had many more things separately than whites. Another problem was that whites had more rights than blacks. Whites were able to vote, serve on juries, work in skilled trades, etc. While blacks weren’t entitled to those rights. Frederick Douglass knew that being treated differently was better than slavery, but he thought everyone should be treated equally and have the same rights. So he chose to fight in the Civil Rights…

Frederick Douglass was born as a slave and was raised by his grandmother Betsy Bailey. Frederick’s mother died when he was just a baby, and he was told that his father was his master but he never had enough courage to ask his master himself. Douglass and his grandmother never received any special treatment, and managed to live in log cabin just like any other slave. When Douglass was set free from his master he decided to supported the Union Cause by encouraging black people to volunteer for military service in the Union Army. The cause for this was because the Union needed more soldiers to fight and although the army was barely trained, they thought that if African Americans were fighting it would prove that the Union meant business.…

Racism is an ongoing problem in America and in the rest of the world. Sometimes it is overlooked today as only happening many, many years ago but that is not true. Globalissues.com defines racism as “The belief that characteristics and abilities can be attributed to people simply on the basis of their race and that some racial groups are superior to others” (“Racism.”). Racism is when people think that someone with a different skin color or culture is different than them or even inferior to them. This is not the truth and it is not what the Bible says to be true. Racism has caused many cases of violence, discrimination, and many other horrible things just because of skin color. It started a very long time ago in American history but it still just as much of a problem today than it was then.…
