Racism And Discrimination In American Society
Looking back at my pre-mortem, I realize that for the most part I was correct. I waste too much time doing unnecessary things like watching Netflix or scrolling through social media. Although my grades have been decent, I know that I can do so much better if I can just set my priorities straight. I need to change the way I look at things; I often focus on the negative sides of things and forget to reward myself when I am successful. On the other hand, I have cut down my spending thus reducing my hours at work, helping me to balance out my life in a healthier way.

Recently, politics have split our nation in two creating a spectrum with two drastic ends. This seems to have created a rise in this dehumanizing behavior, whether it is hate crime or discriminative remarks. Discrimination against customers is not rare and is often reported on nationwide. For example, four Latina customers in California were refused service from a waiter until he saw proof of residency. This is wrong and it is unacceptable, but what is not often reported in discrimination against employees by customers. Around twenty-six million people in the U.S Labor Force are foreign born, which means that twenty-six million people might have been or are currently facing this issue. A couple of months ago, I had a similar experience; while at work, an ignorant customer rudely made the remark that I should return to school and learn English. This completely puzzled me because he took the liberty of assuming that I am uneducated and don’t speak English. I am bilingual and I am proud of my heritage, regardless if that causes me to have an accent. This type of behavior from someone in the 21st century should be completely unacceptable. Because I fear losing my job, I was not able to respond to his comment to defend myself. Businesses should be able to defend their employees and place stricter rules to prevent these types of incidents to continue to happen. In all honesty, this class has helped me more than I thought it would. I really enjoyed the exercises with the different types of sentences because it helps create a more diverse essay. I think the vocabulary logs are also a great aid, as I have already used the words in essays for other classes, and hope to continue to strengthen my

Racism. The prediction of decisions and policies on consideration of race for the purpose of subordinating a racial group and maintaining control over it (Carmichael & Hamilton, 1967). There are two forms of racism in America: individual and institutional. The first consist of acts that are performed by individuals that which results in injury, destruction of property and maybe even death. The latter, institutional, is less detectable, when it comes to specific individuals executing the acts but is as detrimental to the human life as if it was an act done by an individual. Institutional racism originates from the established, respected and powerful forces and reap less humiliation than individual racism. In the end it is institutional racism that keeps African Americans uneducated, behind bars, and living in…

Do you believe racism is still a problem today? Have you ever experienced or witnessed a racist act? Racism is the belief that all members of each race in the world today possess characteristics or abilities that pertain specifically to that race, especially to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Although, some people do not have any issues at all with the concept of racism; majority of people living in America deal with racism in their everyday lives. Racism and discrimination have been used as powerful weapons encouraging fear or hatred of others in times of conflict and even during economic downturns. Discrimination is still among our world today, and stays a constant issue. Many people would argue this accusation, and try to believe that the world today is better than it was years ago, but the fact is that it is still the same. Discrimination is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different genders, religions, and marriage partners. Today people argue about discrimination all of the time. Why is it still among us? What can be done? Why don’t we just let it be? But, in fact, none of these questions are ever solved and might never be answered because of the contrasting beliefs of society. Society has put discrimination into stereotyping and many other different forms, but the point is that discrimination is here to stay and…

In the past decade, racism has changed along with how society has changed. For example, in today’s society, it is rare to see a store, restaurant or anyone who just will not serve anyone because they are black; however, it can still happen. In society today, world racism is taken and given in a different way. When the Internet came into play during the 21st century and social media following not far after, the characteristics of racism changed. Author Emily Fekete writes in her article Race and (Online) Sites Consumption, “Geographers have noted the increasing role of the Internet and social media in everyday life (Zook and Graham 2007; Elwood 2011; Kitchin and Dodge 2011; Stephens 2013)”. Not only has social media increased, but in doing this,…

The United States of America has undergone much in its brief 241 years of independence. In relation to other nations, the Untitled States is still very young, but that does not mean that it hasn’t experienced its fair share of obstacles. However, the amount of inequality among American citizens today is staggering, considering the country was founded by British colonists escaping inequality from England. The United States Declaration of Independence states that “all men are created equally”, these ideals are the foundations of our country. These beliefs are what we use as evidence when praising our country on events such as independence day, but were these ideals ever put into practice? After analyzing the inequality of the colonists of…

My beliefs over the topic of race is that America does discriminate whoever isn't white. There's the stereotypical sayings like Mexicans are supposed to be janitors and black peoples are supposed to be slaves. I believe that America is probably the most racist people out of the world. We try to hide the fact that we are, but then we have all these jokes or circumstance against people who are not white. What I don't know is how people that live in Texas that aren't white deal with it. I don't get why the people that get criticized for their race still hold their hand on their heart. Some of things I'd like to explore is asking different people about their output on this topic. I'd like to explore if people are as racist as we are in other countries.…
