Recently, politics have split our nation in two creating a spectrum with two drastic ends. This seems to have created a rise in this dehumanizing behavior, whether it is hate crime or discriminative remarks. Discrimination against customers is not rare and is often reported on nationwide. For example, four Latina customers in California were refused service from a waiter until he saw proof of residency. This is wrong and it is unacceptable, but what is not often reported in discrimination against employees by customers. Around twenty-six million people in the U.S Labor Force are foreign born, which means that twenty-six million people might have been or are currently facing this issue. A couple of months ago, I had a similar experience; while at work, an ignorant customer rudely made the remark that I should return to school and learn English. This completely puzzled me because he took the liberty of assuming that I am uneducated and don’t speak English. I am bilingual and I am proud of my heritage, regardless if that causes me to have an accent. This type of behavior from someone in the 21st century should be completely unacceptable. Because I fear losing my job, I was not able to respond to his comment to defend myself. Businesses should be able to defend their employees and place stricter rules to prevent these types of incidents to continue to happen. In all honesty, this class has helped me more than I thought it would. I really enjoyed the exercises with the different types of sentences because it helps create a more diverse essay. I think the vocabulary logs are also a great aid, as I have already used the words in essays for other classes, and hope to continue to strengthen my
