Racism In Education
Racism (or Racist): An attitude, action, or practice of an individual or institution, backed by societal power, that undermines human and legal rights or economic opportunities of people because of specific physical characteristics, such as skin color. (Derman-Spark, 2010).
Children experience racism in various forms such as; teasing, name-calling, verbal abuse and bulling. Racism can have an enormous effect on children and their school environment. I currently work in an elementary school composed of 3rd and 4th graders and I have experience racism behavior in and outside the classroom. I always remind children that everyone is special and that everyone needs to be friends. In addition, everyone should be respectful to one another. Racism
