Standard of living refers to the level of wealth, comfort, material goods and necessities available to a certain socioeconomic class in a certain geographic area. The standard of living includes factors such as income, employment availability, poverty rate, housing quality and affordability, hours of work required to purchase necessities, inflation rate, affordable access to quality health care, quality and availability of education, life expectancy, cost of goods and services, economic stability, political and religious freedom, safety. According to Paul Buchheit from Buzzflash, minorities are especially more likely to be cut off from quality schools, housing, health care, consumer credit, and other pathways out of poverty. Misconceptions and assumptions keep people from doing anything about the quality of life for minorities. Buchheit also provided evidence for the improved quality of poverty in America. The 1999 Current Population Survey data presumed that the national poverty rate was 11.8%, which are 32.3 million Americans who were poor. The poverty rate of among minorities went down 5.025% in the past nine years. (Buchheit Web; McKissack p. 27-38; “Definitions for Standard of Living” …show more content…
The world has a rapidly growing population and with a concoction of people from all around. In addition to blacks and whites, we have Hispanics, Latinos, Asians, Muslims, Pacific Islanders, Indians, and Native Americans that have come together. Within each race lies discrimination, for example, blacks can be categorized as” light skin” or "dark skin”. Light skins seem to be the most adequate blacks and they are often seen as the “face” of blacks in the media. Mexicans, Latin Americans, and Spaniards have disputes, over which dialect is the proper way of speaking; Shiite and Sunni Muslims have differences over how their religion should be practiced, and due to contrary belief not all Asian nations get along. Even whites have problems when it comes to racism. Unfortunately, they get the short end of the stick. It is commonly assumed that there is no discrimination against whites, but there is. American outs heavy influence on racism against minorities and the media has copyrighted the term “reverse racism”; the mythological discrimination against whites. The "reverse racism" card is often pulled by whites when a person of color calls out racism and discrimination. Campaigns like MTV’s Look Different set forth to end racial bias in America as well as within the black community itself. (Rosado Web; Gates Web; Blay
