Theme of racism
Racism is a prominent theme in Shakespeare’s Othello.
A lot of things can suggest that ‘Othello’ is a racist play but other themes can actually dominate this opinion. At the time where the play was written (1604), the romantic union between black and white usually gets destroyed and hated upon because most people thought this type of relationship was wrong. Moreover, the queen of England at the time was extremely racist so there must have been a strong hatred towards dark skinned people at the time.
Most racist comments in the play are only said because of upset or angry protagonists; not because of the opinions of the society. For instance, towards the end of the play, Emilia found out that Othello had killed his wife Desdemona, Emilia was really angry and upset and called Othello “Blacker devil”, this was the first and only time she had said anything racist towards Othello. From this, we can see that Emilia has racist opinions towards Othello but does not express it and this tragic event triggered that thought to come out.
The central protagonists that are racist are: Iago, Brabantio, Rodrigo and Emilia; amusingly, every one of these characters has reasons to feel negatively towards Othello.
I think that Iago is the most racist protagonist in this play.
Iago’s hatred towards Othello is displayed right from the start of the play and the source for this is because Othello chose Cassio as his lieutenant instead of Iago. What bothered Iago the most was the fact that Cassio had no experience in war when he did himself. This simple choice results in many different negative emotions and worst of all, death.
Iago was not the only protagonist that had hatred on Othello, Brabantio; Desdemona’s father, was not satisfied with the fact that his white daughter was married to a black male (Othello). This was the main reason why he does not like Othello. Moreover, Iago interferes with other people’s lives and opinions and tries to make all situations that have any kind of involvement with Othello a lot worse than it really is in order to have revenge on innocent and humble Othello. Knowing that Desdemona is the most important thing in Othello’s life, Iago speaks to Brabantio about Desdemona and Othello’s relationship, “even now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe”. He aims to turn Brabantio against his son in law but also his daughter because she has been defiled by the Moore. Moreover, when he says “your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs”; Iago tries his best to make Brabantio feel even more uncomfortable about his daughter’s relationship. “Beast” and “two backs” suggests the two innocent couple are having wild sex and also sounds unpleasant. This imagery created is mind bothering.
Although Iago has the most hatred towards Othello, you would think that Othello knows this; on the contrary he does not. Iago’s evil and mischievous plans are kept a secret and not known by anyone but him. In addition, Iago doesn’t actually say anything negative to Othello’s face as his role was to be his best friend and to not make Othello suspicious that he was the cause of all the trouble that came towards him.
Rodrigo is another protagonist that’s against Othello; he does not actually have a good reason for this but he does what he does because he is Iago’s accomplice. He works with Iago and does what he is ordered to do because of Iago’s talent of being able to twist a situation and make it as if Rodrigo would benefit a lot from his plans. One of the negative comments he uses to describe Othello is “thick lips”, Rodrigo is mocking Othello and also, this is a common characteristic for a black person, furthermore, as Othello is compared to a black horse many times throughout the play (Moor), a horse has very thick lips compared to a human being and this contributes with the insults aimed at him. Shakespeare uses dramatic irony when Iago was plotting his evil plan to destroy Othello and Desdemona’s relationship. Through many lies and theft of the token Othello gave to Desdemona when they got married, Othello fell for Iago’s trickery and eventually believed that Desdemona was being disloyal with his new lieutenant Cassio. He is bothered by this very much and his conscience leads him to commit unforgivable and irreversible actions. Before Othello her life was taken she says “kill me tomorrow; let me live tonight!” she’s begging him to give her a chance to prove her innocence and even agrees to be killed rather than trying to get away and survive. She goes on to say “a guiltless death I die”; this dialogue instantly makes Othello have second thoughts about his actions however, Iago’s mind boggling false facts leads him to continue with what him and Iago both planned.

When reading the play Othello, a modern day reader cannot help but wonder if the play is racist. After all, there are several places found throughout the story that reference derogatory terms towards people of African descent. Comments such as, “Blacker devil”(5.2. 131), “an old black ram” (1.1.9), and, “Moor are now making the beast with two backs” (1.1.7), may leads the reader to believe that story is racist towards black people. However, this may not be true for a number of reasons, one being that these terms are only used out of spite or anger towards Othello. These types of comments aren’t seen too often during the story and are never used because the character generally has a racist view of Othello. Only when these characters are angered is when these racial slurs come about. In addition, Othello was written with the main protagonist to be a black man, and the antagonist to be white people. Therefore, this story can be interpreted in multiple ways with regards to racism.…

Iago is an evil person but that is all he is guilty of being. Othello was a proven warrior and was respected by high ranking officials because of his proven leadership. However, Othello was a bad judge of character and exercised poor judgment throughout the play by blindly and naively believing Iago’s lies. He did not trust the people that truly loved him and were most loyal to him. This character flaw was exploited masterfully by Iago, to the point that Othello became insanely jealous of the perceived affair between Desdemona and Cassio.…

Othello’s specific ethnic background is of a darker race. Even though he was ‘black’ he was accepted as a leader. He was a general in the army, so he respectable social values. Othello is portrayed as courageous and honourable with the integrity to protect his city. In terms of marrying a white woman, views of Othello were significantly different. Through the use of the quote “Even now, now an old black ram is tupping your white ewe.” The use of the word ‘black’ signifies an inherent evil as Brabantio seems to view as well. Brabantio couldn’t understand how his daughter could be happy with an ‘outsider’, causing him to accuse Othello of witchcraft as this belief was relevant at the time. This emphasises the racial view of the Elizabethan era.…

As you cleverly pointed out, due to “all the conflicts {being} laid out in fairly simple terms” key themes of feminism and racism are diluted. Othello remained a victim of racism throughout the original play, yet in the adaption the only evidence of racism is a couple of insults. During the Elizabethan era, the white race was superior to any other due to the strong sense of hierarchy. Racism is unacceptable in society today however in certain parts of the world prejudice nature and something that is hard to avoid. The director failed to take advantage of the setting of the movie. Race is very important in the play. Othello was a moor. In simplest terms he was a man of color. His race is what set him apart from the other characters. Also Othello is the only character of color which automatically set him inside. Being that he is a military general (a position not offered to black men) a lot of the characters don’t like him, and a lot of characters described him negatively because to them he was just a moor. But others respect and admire him because of his accomplishments. Iago was not his biggest fan so of coarse he said things that were not meant to be nice. “Iago: Even now, now very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe. Arise, arise; Awake the snorting citizens with the bell. Or else the devil will make a grandsire if you arise I say!” (Act 1, Scene 1) Here Iago is upset that a moor is with a white woman. So he tells Desdemona’s father about the relationship. But all throughout what he is saying he is making racial slurs. In response to this Desdemona’s father says “BRABANTIO: She, in spite of nature, Of years, of country, credit, every thing, To fall in love with what she fear'd to look on! It is a judgment maim'd and most imperfect That will confess perfection so could err Against all rules of nature.” (Act 1, Scene 3) which means he feels that Desdemona’s feelings for Othello is wrong. It is unnatural since he is black and she is white. Even Othello himself describes his color as being something bad at one point. “Othello: All my fond love thus do I blow to heaven. 'Tis gone. Arise, black vengeance, from thy hollow cell! (Act 3, Scene 3) Throughout the play there are many comments as to Othello’s race. I personally think the whole play is based around two things his race in comparison to everyone else’s, and his race with Desdemona’s race because he is a “moor” and every one else is not. Well race and jealousy anyway but race is what stands out more.…

Ideas of discrimination and racism have also been reflected within the play through the characterisation of Othello. Described as having “thick lips” and a darker skin tone, the protagonist experiences a sense of isolation from society due to his evident difference in physical appearance.. By demonstrating ideas of separation in the play, the reader is poised to read it as a text that incorporates strong ideas of discrimination, both evident during Shakespeare’s time and our current society. This discriminating prejudice leads to the deterioration of Othello’s confidence, where he states ‘for I am black’and ‘unworthy of love’. Ideas of discrimination and racism becomes particularly apparent when Iago constantly addresses Othello as ‘The Moor’…

‘Othello’ was written in the Elizabethan era. Its characters and their language reflected much of the white European society’s views of race and gender. People of colour in England at that time were exceedingly rare. Those that there were were an unfamiliar sight, and they provoked feelings of distrust, hostility and mystery. The idea of a baptised Moor, much esteemed by the senators of Venice, would seem alien to the first audiences of this play. A quote from Coleridge on what he considered to be the attidude of the Elizabethan audience to Shakespeare using Othello as lead character:…

Many examples can be quoted from the play Othello to show that William Shakespeare did give importance to race. ‘Black’ has always been denoted to be evil and ugly since the Elizabethans believed that outward appearances reflected the inner reality. Because of this misconception they viewed black as sinful, evil and associated it with devil. At the beginning, black people were taken by force and brought to England as slaves and servants against their will. But later they became members of English society who were called as Moors.…

Depending on cultural differences and upbringing a text will have different impacts on the audience. Like any great piece of literature, William Shakespeare’s plays deal with timeless concerns that have the ability to be adapted and presented to remain relevant for modern audiences. Shakespeare’s Othello is a Jacobean play written in a time of racist attitudes towards foreigners and sexist attitudes to women. This revenge tragedy follows the protagonist Othello, a black army general who is manipulated by his ensign Iago. For me the way that race and colour is presented in contrast to the stereotypical portrayal highlights the prejudice apparent in not only the Jacobean society but our own as well. This is portrayed through Iago’s racist depiction of Othello and the opposing imagery of black and white. The play can also be viewed as having a strong feminist theme. The two heroines are portrayed as capable and steadfast individuals. Both women are the only characters that remain justified throughout in their loyalty to their husbands.…

Race is one of the main topics in Othello that Shakespeare goes ahead and plays with. Othello being the only black man in the story he is different from the main characters. He is seen as a man of dignity, respect, and pride. Othello is different from the perceived view of darker colored folks at the time. Shakespeare uses racial otherness to toy around with the reader’s view of the characters. Most potent, grave, and reverend signiors, my very noble and approved good masters,…. Hath this extent, no more. Rude am I in my speech, And little blessed with the soft phrase of peace,.. (Othello 79-85) Othello has what people of his skin color were perceived not to have which is somewhat of an education. Shakespeare instilled the exact opposite of the readers perception into Othello. Othello lets the Duke and all others know that he knows his place and tells them that he is not a good speaker, actually quite the awkward one but he switches the subject to the task at hand with having to go to Cyprus. Othello is seen using his quick whit at the beginning of the play to defer the Duke and men to the more important issue. Readers at this time would have been shocked to see a man of darker color with somewhat of a quick…

Shakespeare’s play Othello displays the theme of racism towards the tragic hero Othello. According to Dictionary.com, racism is defined as, “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.” In Othello, racism seems to overpower what a great leader and husband Othello is. This theme of racism is shown by Iago using racial slurs when awakening Brabantio, Brabantio arguing about Desdemona and Othello’s love being unnatural, and everyone referring to Othello as the Moor.…
