They also tend to be ignorant too. I have a very close friend who identifies as Genderqueer and prefers to be called with gender neutral pronouns (They/Them). They are constantly harassed and mistreated by our fellow classmates I have witnessed their ignorance first-hand. Unlike the small group of people in our class, everyone else refuses to respect my friend’s preferred pronouns and still continue to bully and harass them verbally and in the form of rude text messages. One form of it is gender roles. Girls are expected to like all things feminine, be dumber and to be the weaker sex meanwhile guys are seen as masculine, stronger and smarter. Another form of sexism is slutshaming. I remember a day not that long ago, I wore a skirt that wasn’t even that short. Throughout the day, I received comments about how short and revealing it was. I realized that no matter what girls wear, we will always be ridiculed for it. If we cover up, we’re prudes and if we wear a dress or a skirt apparently we’re a slut or a whore. I’ve heard so many boys call girls a whore because of how thin her dress strap was or a hoe because of how short her shorts were, and don’t even get me started on how the media handles these topics. Celebrity news outlets freak everytime a woman wears something revealing or form-fitting and telling her to cover up. Then when she fights back people will call her a “feminazi” or a social justice warrior who needs to chill out and shut up. Basically, the media portrayal of women is
