Radiant Child: Jean-Michel Basquiat's Books
In the list of biographies there was a lot of similarities. Most of the books were about a historical figure, that made a big impact in our society and history. These books focus more in the facts and specific events, to teach children about the past history. Almost all the books included illustrations. What surprised me was the two books, Brown Girl Dreaming and Radiant Child, because they were very unique and the story was told differently from the other biographies. The picturebook Radiant Child, is about an artist named Jean-Michel Basquiat. This picturebook not only tells his story, but the author also added vivid text and bold artwork which represented the artist personality in a creative way. The book, Brown Girl Dreaming was also surprising,

What does it mean to own something and how can it impact our sense of self? Many philosophers have has opposing views about this. However, Jean-Paul Sartre has the most accurate representation about the meaning of owning something. Ownership expands beyond physical objects, which means that it includes intangible things. This includes learning a skill or knowing a subject extremely well. Also, ownership doesn’t always impact character negatively, the same way it doesn’t impact it positively all the time. You can see examples of this all throughout everyday life, literature, and movies.…

The two Mexican American characteristics that I saw in the Zoot Suite movie are, “Showing an Oppositional way of thinking, and “Rewrite the Mexican American and Mexican experience back into history”. The movie Zoot Suite was about a play that relived the trial of Henry Reyna, which is based off the real trial of Henry Leyvas. They showed how Mexican Americans in Los Angeles were being treated and how they were wrongly judged due to the way they looked. The “zoot suites” was the style of young Chicanos back in the day, and the police associated crime and violence with their look. The movie clearly expressed the inequality they faced during the jury trial. These are all examples of how the movie used Oppositional way of thinking/ questioning…

It often has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If someone were to look up beauty in the dictionary, they would read this: beauty is a characteristic of a person, animal, place, object, or idea that provides a perceptual experience of pleasure, meaning, or satisfaction. In other words, beauty is anything that is pleasing to the eye. Today’s society teaches that the way to beauty is to become rich and successful, only worrying about oneself, but is that true beauty? Is true beauty not giving oneself up for another? True beauty comes when someone cares about others that cannot return that care. Jean Vanier embodies true beauty because he gave up a rich, easy lifestyle to invest himself into and live with people who could not offer him anything in return.…

The fairy tale Beauty and the Beast opens with the characters of a rich merchant and his six children, three boys and three girls. "The two eldest girls were vain of their wealth and position" (22), but the youngest girl, the prettiest of the three, had a more pleasing personality, humble and considerate. This youngest daughter was so beautiful even as a child that everyone called her Little Beauty. She was just as lovely as she grew up so that she was never called by any other name, a fact that made her sisters extremely jealous. All three girls had numerous marriage proposals - the two eldest always turned their suitors away with the declaration that they had no intentions of marrying anyone less than a duke or an earl. Beauty too always turned her proposals down, but with kindness, answering that she thought herself too young and would rather live some years longer with her father.…

The Stranger by Albert Camus holds a nihilistic theme. Camus, being a philosopher, wrote a lot about his perspective on life. He discusses how he believes that life has absolutely no meaning besides living in order to inevitably face death. In the story, The Stranger, Meursault symbolizes Albert Camus's beliefs through his personality and actions. Neither the external world in which Meursault perceives nor the internal world of his thoughts, emotions, and actions possesses any rational order. He is considered an outsider to everyone else who has created order on a planet that has no meaning. Meursault's relationship with society is conflicting and his very nature is threatening to people's world view. Instances in which he shows this society conflicting nature are present when Meursault shoots the Arab, shows no emotional reaction to his mothers death, decides to get married, and lastly, when he reaches the conclusion that life has no meaning and he no longer fears death.…
