How do you suppose your target reader would wish to be spoken to if the two of you were having a verbal, face-to-face conversation about the topic at hand? Once again, you may need to do a bit of acting in your head to find the voice that interacts appropriately with the target reader. Here are the roles that apply to our topic examples:

In this scenario, pretend that you are the compassionate veterinarian speaking to the concerned cat owner. Your goal as a veterinarian is to present the facts, and pros and cons of radioiodine treatment so that the cat owner can make an informed decision for her pet. Your worried cat-owning reader will want empathy and understanding as you answer their questions and address their concerns in a professional manner.
