Radiology In Australian Nuclear Medicine
On average, every Australian can expect to have a nuclear medicine procedure that uses a radioisotope for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes at some stage in their life. Nuclear medicine and radiology are the medical techniques that involve the use of radiation or radioactivity to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. While radiology has been used for close to a century, the term "nuclear medicine" began to be used around 50 years ago. Today, about one-third of all procedures used in modern hospitals involve radiation or radioactivity. These procedures are safe, effective and don't require anaesthetic. They are useful in a broad spectrum of medical specialties, from pediatrics to cardiology to psychiatry. While both nuclear medicine and

To obtain this information, a very small dose of a radioactive chemical, called a radiotracer, is injected into the vein of the patient’s arm. The tracer then travels through the body and is absorbed by the concerned organs and tissues. The machine detects and records the energy given off by the tracer substance and, with help from a computer, this energy is converted into three-dimensional pictures. A doctor can then look at images of the body’s organ from any angle in order to detect any functional problems.…

Radiological protection deals with methods and efforts of safeguarding people and the surroundings from the deadly effects of ionizing radiation that includes electromagnetic radiation and particle radiation. Sometimes radiation cannot be controlled or contained and accidents take place causing radiation leaks. For this reason, protocols and radiation safety has become a pre-curser in our everyday life.…

As a radiation therapist, I treat cancer and other diseases by administering radiation using a machine called a linear accelerator. It is my job to simulate, schedule, and treat patients as well as being empathic to my patient's concerns and easing any anxieties they may have. I image each patient daily using either two-dimensional or three-dimensional x-ray imaging prior to their treatment to localize the treatment volume before I administer their radiation treatment, this ensures accuracy of the treatment delivery and avoids healthy surrounding tissue. It is crucial that I accurately maintain daily treatment records and daily QA to make sure the machine is running properly. Although at times it is difficult for me to treat terminally…

Radiation consists of using high doses of radiation to kill the cancer cells. What radiation does to the cancer cell is that it causes chemical changes that destabilize DNA, the genetic code that tells a cell how to grow, reproduce and die. Doctors need to be extra careful with radiation because it can also kill good healthy cells. To protect good cells from getting harmed, doctors need to be as precise as possible when aiming radiation. Doctors also limit the amount of radiation administered in a patient, depending on the goal of treatment and the organs around the area that is to be treated, (Bernard, 2006).…

Nuclear medicine technology involves the use of radioactive materials, called radiopharmaceuticals, to create images of organs, study body functions, analyze biological specimens and treat disease. Nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) apply the art and skill of diagnostic imaging and therapeutics through the safe and effective use of radionuclides. For organ-imaging procedures, radiopharmaceuticals are administered to patients intravenously, orally or by inhalation. The radioactive material concentrates in a specific organ or organ system.…

Radiology is a medical specialty that employs the use of imaging to both diagnose and treat disease visualized within the human body. Radiologists use an array of imaging technologies (such as x-ray radiography, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)) to diagnose or treat diseases. Interventional radiology is the performance of, usually minimally invasive, medical procedures with the guidance of imaging technologies. The acquisition of medical imaging is usually carried out by the radiographer or radiologic technologist. The field of radiology is rapidly expanding due to advances in computer technology, which is closely linked to modern imaging.…

Nuclear medicine has been around for ages, its discoveries has brought about different variations of treatments, those in which have helped millions combat diseases. It uses radiation to administer information about the functioning of a person’s organs or to treat diseases. It detects early signs in the tissue. Nuclear medicine procedures are very safe and do not require anesthesia. A small dose of radiopharmaceuticals is introduced into the body with low radiation and still provide a definite medical evaluation. That is why it has been around for so long. It is important for us to identify the basis of treatments, how the benefits pertain to the patients, and how specialists play a major role.…

A medical field is a place full of diverse opportunities. Opportunities such as surgery, medicine treatments, and multiple therapy options. Radiation therapy has impacted many people's lives just in the last few years. Cancer patients especially, have been given another chance at life through a few treatment rounds. In the past to remove cancerous tumors and small masses, surgery was the only option to improve those patients lives; with advances in technology and medicine, radiation therapy has become a very likely option for these patients. An option that helps improve their state of life, while not having the side effects of going under the knife. When it comes to the health aspect of surgery versus radiation, radiation therapy is more effective because of radiation therapy has less life-threatening side effects than surgery, a lessened risk of post-surgery infection and a more precise and effective…

Radioisotopes are used for diagnosis, treatment, and research. Over 10,000 hospitals worldwide use radioisotopes in medicine, and about 90% of the procedures are for diagnosis. Radioisotopes give doctors the ability to look inside the body and observe soft tissues and organs, in a manner similar to the way x-rays provide images of bones. Radioisotopes carried in the blood also allow doctors to detect clogged arteries or check the functioning of the circulatory system. Doctors also use radio-pharmaceuticals or radioactive drugs to detect problems within a body organ. The radioisotope used in about 80 percent of nuclear diagnostic procedures is Tc-99m. Tc-99m is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition caused by calcium deficiency in older people, especially women. Radioactive chemical tracers emitting gamma rays or positrons can provide diagnostic information about a person's internal anatomy and the functioning of specific organs.…

X-rays are mostly used in hospitals, at dentists and orthodontists, by vets and on airports. Doctors and vets can see what is wrong with your bones or what is wrong inside your body. Dentists and orthodontists use them to see how the position of your pillory and teeth are. On airports they use X-rays for checking of the bags, for metals, like knifes. When a X-ray is used, small pieces, which are radioactive, will be shot. The bones in your body or metals are too thick for the radioactive pieces, so the pieces will stop there. On a picture you see always black and white. The black is the plate you or your bag or pet is laying on, it’s where the radioactivity reached, and the white parts are the bones or metals, where the radioactivity stopped.…

Radioisotopes are extensively used in medicine for diagnosis, either in vivo or in vitro, for therapeutics and also for investigation purposes. Nuclear medicine (NM) studies in vivo are used to detect minimal amounts of radiopharmaceuticals in organs (the morphology) and their course over time (the function), resulting from physico-chemical interactions of the tracers within the body, in the sequence of specific physiological processes. In vitro applications of radioisotopes have become a most important tool in biochemical analysis. Therapeutic uses of radioisotopes cover from external gamma-ray sources in teleradiotherapy to direct cell irradiation in metabolic therapy.…
