There have been plenty of different versions of the Bible in its long history of existence. Plenty of these attempts are focused on the modernization or contextualization of the Word of God. The Message is a version that has received plenty of criticism because many people believe that it changes the meaning of the verses too much. When such a highly studied and debated work such as the Bible is altered in any form or fashion, there are going to be people that despise it, but translations are bound to happen. The ancient text of the Bible has been altered so that it speaks to the people more effectively, and that was just the reason Clarence Jordan created the Cotton Patch version of the Bible. In the following paper we will use research about the Cotton Patch Versions, Clarence Jordan, the Southern Baptist Church, Harry Chaplin’s music, and Tom Key to discuss how Jesus is portrayed in The Cotton Patch Gospel.…
Being a writer in current times is becoming more and more of a difficult job, having to take precautions not to offend the masses by writing in a seeming diplomatic way. All in order to be labeled politically correct. Making it a delicate job to write one's own opinion or to tell a story from a foreign point of view. Yet these are all things writer Christopher Moore does in his book Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. Not only does he accomplish this task but he tells his story in such away, to bring together different views of the same issue. A fantastic insightful and charming coming of age story of one of the most controversial beings in existence, Jesus Christ. Christopher Moore’s writing success can not be pinned down to a single element. It’s his creative mind and diverse writing style that makes Moore's books so intriguing. Yet there is a outstanding theme among his writings that lets Moore truly personify himself in his own words. That is his humor. Not only does Christopher Moores sense of humor fill his…
The books that we were required to read for Bible 115 class were Engaging God’s World – A Christian Vision Of Faith, Learning And Living by Cornelius Plantinga Jr. and The Call – Finding And Fulfilling The Central Purpose For Your Life by Os Guinness. Both books offered very useful advice for today’s Christians. Engaging God’s World is written for students and will help them make sense of their education in a Christian perspective. Both authors use scripture, humor and common sense to validate their points.…
I liked parts of James Cone's ideas in liberation theology as well as Gustavo Gutierrez's idea of Christian mission. I truly believe some of the theological…
Christian faith. Reading this text reminded me of stories told in the bible. What I found…
The text’s Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, by Jonathan Edwards, and The Minister’s Black Veil, by Nathaniel Hawthorne both have pretty similar subjects. Both texts talk about preachers and sins, and how sinning is bad, and you can’t try to cover up your sins, it will just bring you down.…
“Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” is the more effective text because of the way it is presented to the people. It's as if they are being punished and it touches them more on a personal level. Although some might say that, “The Minister’s Black Veil,” is the more effective text due to it relating to a man’s life and showing how it was destroyed by sin. That may be an eye opener for some people, but not everyone will take it realistically or…
In Hughes’ nonfiction story, “Salvation,” he writes about his salvation from sin that was instead an abandonment of his belief in Jesus. The story begins with the revival at his Auntie Reed’s church. Hughes was told:…
In “Salvation” by Langston Hughes, Hughes explains how he as a young boy lost faith in his religion. Hughes writes of being about twelve years old and being brought by his aunt to church to try and find Jesus. Hughes is told that he will see Jesus and “something happened to you inside!” When Hughes went to church he and the other children were put at the front of the church and had all the adults pray around them. Many children got up right away signifying that they had found Jesus right away. Hughes and another boy ended up being the last ones searching for Jesus. The other boy lied about seeing Jesus so he could get up leaving Hughes by himself. Feeling guilty about being the only person not to see Jesus, Hughes lied about seeing Jesus. Later that night Hughes cried and explained to the reader that he had lost faith in Jesus. The piece by Hughes is well written and connects to the reader on a personal basis.…
While the teenaged Tillman knew he wasn’t fit for the life of a pastor, he was not yet able to realize his talent because the only music he was exposed to came from a choir, and failed to ignite any passion. His love for music was not established until he was almost an adult, and his parents surprised the 17 year old with a new house rule. He would be able to listen to secular music so long as it was spiritually themed. Tillman returned from the record store with Slow Train Coming, Bob…
I recommend this book to people who like to learn more about Jesus, God, the apostles, and heaven. I loved reading this…
