Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant(sedative)- it slows down the body’s functions and its effects are similar to those of a general painkillings. Ethyl alcohol (ethanol) is the active ingredient in all alcoholic drinks.
Ether is an anesthetic that works on the brain and puts it to sleep. The same symptoms operating patient experiences under ether are those experienced by a person drinking alcohol.intro
Ethanol is commercially produced using a process called fermentation. Many other alcohols can be made this way, but are more likely to be produced by artificial routes - from natural gas, oil or coal.
Yeast cannot survive in high levels of alcohol, so to create stronger spirits an additional process, distillation, is required. Fermented drinks are distilled to create vodka, rum and other spirits. Distillation depends on ethanol having a lower boiling point than water. When the fermented drink is heated the ethanol vaporises at 78.5 degrees and the water is left behind (water boils or vaporises at 100 degrees). The ethanol gas is caught and cooled so it condenses into a stronger concentration of ethanol liquid.
In wine making the sugars come from the flesh of the crushed grapes. The type of wine produced depends on the type of grape used in the process. Alcohol is created when grains, fruits, or vegetables are fermented. Fermentation is a process that uses yeast or bacteria to change the sugars in the food into alcohol. .
Alcohol and the body
Once alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream, it is rapidly distributed throughout the body. It affects almost every cell, every organ, and every level of human functioning, .The most intense early effect is on the central nervous system, where it acts as a sedative, producing relaxation and sense of well-being. It impairs the intellect, physical abilities and digestion.
When alcohol is taken regularly, in large amounts over many years, permanent physical damage will occur. This damage is often aggravated by the lack of vitamins because most alcoholics have poor eating habits. Alcohol can also damage the liver, brain and other parts of the nervous system.
Alcohol and the brain
Any chemical that alters mood, feelings, co-ordination,sensitivity , or behaviour, alters the cells in the brain and disrupts their normal chemical behaviour.
When alcohol enters the blood stream it travels to the brain. Alcohol can spoil vision, mislead hearing, confuse speech, weaken judgement, reduce the body’s senses, disturb motor skills, and reduce co-ordination.
These effects are produced because alcohol prevents blood from transporting oxygen to brain cells.
Exposure to alcohol can represent a serious risk to a child. Women who drink during their pregnancies increase the risk of having a baby born with physical or mental handicaps.
A recent study has found that a father’s drinking habits during the month of his child’s conception can affect his baby’s birth weight.
The possibility of cancer increases with chronic alcohol use. This is most common in the upper part of the body (mouth, throat, etc.) but is not limited to any one of your organs. People who drink more than double their chance of skin cancer and female drinkers are more likely to get breast cancer than ladies who do not drink.
When the amount of alcohol in the blood exceeds a certain level, the respiratory (breathing) system slows down markedly, and can cause a coma or death, because oxygen no longer reaches the brain.
