In the chapter, The Red Candle, the author explains everything in detail. She explains about the red columns in front of the house for decoration, the red dragons, the red wedding dress with the red wedding veil, the red banners, the red palanquin, and finally the red candle. I found this as a motif because it appeared in almost every section of the 3rd chapter. Ying-Ying also explains that her mother gave her a necklace made out of red jade. Red was a traditional color in Chinese culture, possibly a powerful color, as purple was to Europe.…

By reviewing the United State's track record on wars, it is quite obvious that the United States has never heard of "minding your own beezwax." In Eugene Jarecki's documentary film, Why We Fight, he shares with his audience the history of the United States involvement in wars. He especially reviews the 2003 Iraq invasion and its corrupt motives. After viewing Jarecki's movie, I have to completely agree with the film maker's assertion on how Americans have been lied to by the government because of their pursuit for economic and political dominance.…

That is the unspoken challenge laid down by “The Black Balloon,” a harrowing, unsentimental portrait of a middle-class Australian family whose oldest son has severe autism compounded by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Would you find in yourself the seemingly infinite reserves of love and patience possessed by the Mollisons, the movie’s itinerant, highly stressed army family who have just moved to the suburbs of Sydney? Maybe not.…

Stephen Edwin King has written many famous novels that have been turned into great films. The Green Mile is one of the films that have been produced into an award-winning movie. The story begins with a former prison guard named Paul Edgecomb who is currently living in a retirement home. A past memory suddenly strikes Paul in which brings back many old stories from when he was a prison guard at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. He begins to tell the story of a man named John Coffey who is convicted of murdering two little girls. Edgecomb and his fellow guards, who work on death row, begin to witness series of supernatural events that John Coffey performs. The power of healing is seen throughout the story in which Coffey uses on Paul himself, a mouse named Mr. Jingles, and a woman who is suffering from a brain tumor. The guards begin to develop this idea that Coffey is an innocent man. Since it’s their job to perform the electric chair to the inmates, they feel its wrong to kill an innocent man like John Coffey. As it’s about time to execute Coffey, Paul Edgecomb asks John if he wishes to be free and he rightfully denies his offer. He claims he can feel the pain of others all around him and does not wish to continue to feel such pain in the world anymore. The guards proceed with the execution in an emotional and touching scene where they must kill a man of such kindness and nobility. As the guards watch in tears, John Coffey is electrocuted and killed. The story then goes back to Paul as an old man in the retirement home where he has been telling this story to an old friend. Paul is over a hundred years old and that is because he believes before John Coffey died he had stored some of his healing power inside of him, which has caused him to live for such a long time. Raise the Red Lantern directed by Zhang Yi Mou is a movie that is set in 1920’s china. It tells the tragic story of 19 year old University student Songlian who becomes the fourth mistress in the wealthy Chen family after her father’s death. The opening scene shows the process from Songlian’s marriage discussion with her mother to the moment she steps into the life of being the puppet of the Chen household. In the opening scene we are introduced to the protagonist; Songlian, the Master, the household maids and Songlian’s future maid; Yan’er. From the dialogue between Songlian and her mother at the very start of the scene, we are notified that she is unwillingly being sent away to get married with a wealthy man, as she makes constant pauses indicating her unwillingness and the Heavy flat despondent tone to show that she is unhappy. As the story proceeds, she walks to the household without taking the bridal carriage, still wearing her school girl costume. She was led through the house by the house keeper when she meets her future maid, whom she has some conflict with when Yan’er refuses to let her use the water to wash her arm and face, Songlian instantly stands up and tells yan’er to bring her bag furiously, attempting to establish her position in the household. The purpose of this scene is to show how dramatically Song lian’s polite school girl personality changes into those of a cranky, uneducated woman. It contributes to the development of the story as we can unravel more of why Yan’er dislikes Songlian so much and how Songlian’s personality continues to change further in the story.…
