Raising the Drop Out Age Students at the age of 16 are too young to make life changing decisions about their education. In the United States almost every state complies with the age limit of 16 for a student to be able to decide as to whether they would want to continue their education. The age requirement to be able to make this decision should be raised to 18 because education is important, 16 is not a mature age to make such a decision, and it keeps students from giving up, and pushes them to keep going. Sixteen is the prime age of a person to start learning and maturing, not making adult role decisions. “Education is the transmission to civilization.” From the start of kindergarten kids are required to begin being educated. This is the period where a person begins to learn their very first skills of life. From this time until the age of 18, education becomes a part of life, if so chose. Today in our society education is being more stressed on the younger generations, in order to be able to make a decent financial living. As we become more technology dependent and everyday essential prices increase, the only option many have is to further their education to be able to make a substantial income. If a person at the age of 16 so decides that school is not going well, they do not enjoy it, or want to continue with it any longer they have the right to drop out. Based on my experience at that age, as well as many others of whom I know, giving up or dropping out is the easiest way to get out of something. If we raise the age limit to 18, it pushes them to keep going. School is like a marathon. Except in this marathon you have the choice to not go to the finish line if you don't want to, and instead stop at the marker before it. If we increase the age limit we can push teenagers to stay in school and give them more of a chance to embrace learning.
