Ralph As A Leader In Lord Of The Flies, By William Golding
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, an airplane crashes on a deserted island, stranding a group of schoolboys. Ralph, a boy on the island is elected leader of the group, but is he a good leader? Ralph is a very good leader who knows how to take control. However, there are times when the group has some conflicts. There are many examples throughout the book that prove that Ralph is a good leader. One example of Ralph being a worthy leader is when he assigns Jack and his choir the job of being hunters. Ralph felt bad that Jack wasn't elected leader so he wanted to give him what he wanted. For example, Ralph says in the book, “ Jack’s in charge of the choir. They can be-what do you want them to be”? (23). To be a respectable leader, Ralph
must listen to what everyone has to say and value the boys opinions or else they will rebell. Another example of Ralph being a valuable leader is when he suggests to make a huge fire so when a plane or boat passes by they will easily be noticed. All of the boys agree on making a fire and they are very excited that they might actually get off the island. Ralph says in the book, “If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire." (38). In other words, without the fire on top of the mountain, there would be less of a chance that the boys would be rescued. As a leader, Ralph has been doing an unbelievable job although there are some times where there are disagreements between the boys. Another reason Ralph is a good leader is because he always has a positive attitude. Having a positive attitude is a very important quality in a leader. For example, Ralph says in the book, “We want to be rescued; and of course we shall be rescued.” (37). This simple statement brought light and happiness to the boys.
Although these school boys are stuck on a deserted island, they try to make the best of it with Ralph as their elected leader.
