Ralphio Saperstein Plot
As someone who grew up in a town in a Great Lakes state, the television show Parks and Recreation rang true with me when I watched it last year. Lovingly nicknamed Parks and Rec, the show depicts the strange mixture of liberal, conservative, and just plain weird that any American would recognize. Following the local government of Pawnee, Indiana, viewers see the world they live in, and learn to laugh at all the things that make them American.

The story begins when Ann Perkins attends a town meeting. Actually, some argue the story begins in 1983, when the father of Jean Ralphio Saperstein was introduced in a separate TV series. The evidence supporting Steve Harrington’s relation to Jean Ralphio Saperstein is its own can of worms, but I digress.

Steve always changes his story, telling the jury one thing but writing something else in his notebook. The Showcase Television Network series, Trailer Park Boys, is a Canadian mockumentary created and directed by Mike Clattenburg. The show covers the shenanigans and crimes of the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park residents. Ricky, Julian, and Bubbles, the three protagonists, are constantly on the hunt for ways to make money, find liquor, and stay out of jail. All the while, their sworn enemies - the drunken trailer park supervisor Jim Lahey, and the perpetually shirtless Randy Bobandy - are coming up with schemes to catch the boys doing something illegal and send them back to the prison. Like other mockumentary shows, such as The Office and Modern Family, a portion of the show is dedicated to confessionals between the residents and the camera crew that not-so-subtly follows them around. Unlike other mockumentary shows, Trailer Park Boys prides itself on being vulgar and obscene. Throughout the series seven year run, the word “fuck” was said 1,284 times and the word “shit” was said 967 times. Despite being very successful in Canada, Australia, Spain, and Denmark, the show has never found success in the United States where it aired on BBC America (obviously it was censored heavily). The show’s success has led to two feature-length films that, despite positive critical reception, never reached the same success as the show from which they derived.…

For my visual analysis assignment I chose to go visit the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It has been an extremely long time since I last visited a museum. I took my twelve year old son with me to explore what the museum had to offer. We found the art to be very interesting, educational and unique. There were so many beautiful pieces throughout the museum that it was difficult trying to decide which one I wanted to base my visual analysis on.…

Despite the fact that Our Town takes place between 1901 and 1913 and Steel Magnolias is set in the late 1980s, an average day in Grover's Corners is much like one in Chinquapin. Both of these fictional cities demonstrate small-town life. On an ordinary day, in both cities, the newsboys make their morning rounds delivering the daily newspapers to the townspeople. In Chinquapin, the delivery man distributes parcels to their recipients, while the milkman in Grover's Corners delivers his goods. A skirmish between George and Rebecca Gibbs corresponds to that of Shelby's brothers, Jonathon and Tommy.…

The movie takes place in two main locations, the little town of Rock Ridge and the capital where the governor resides. There is a railroad that is being built but it ran into an area of quicksand and now needs a new route. That new route that the railroad needs to take is right through the little all-white frontier town of Rock Ridge. Rock Ridge is full of simple townsfolk who all have the last name of Johnson, which exemplifies the homogeneity of the town. It shows the townsfolk in church and they are discussing the troubles that have been happening in the town, to which they decide they need to wire the governor for a new one since the last one they had was murdered.…

Cruz also has a “tough guy” reputation and persona, he is clearly an insubordinate, regarding his response to Steve. Which makes it ever more likely that he would lie under oath in order to incriminate Steve, who had challenged his authority. The woman who said that she was in the store shortly before the actual robbery and murder took place, her statement only places James King in the store during that time. By her account she was the only one in the store prior to the arrival of the two perpetrators.(162-164). The character witness for Steve Harmon was George Sawicki, high school film teacher, his testimony shows the true side of Steve, “I think he is an outstanding young man. He is talented, bright, and compassionate.” (235) In a diary entry by Steve on Thursday July 9th, (93) Steve reveals “That was what I was thinking, about what was in my heart and what that made me… I know that in my heart I am not a bad person.” The above compiled evidence has revealed Steve Harmon’s true nature, that of…

The turn of the Twentieth century serves as an age of major sociological change in America. The country experienced a pivotal transformation due to the growth of industry and cities, which gave rise to a need for recreation activities. During this time genteel reformers strived to set the standard for society by founding museums, art galleries, libraries, symphonies, and other establishments that would encourage people to spend their leisure time being constructive. Although the upper and middle classes could appreciate these institutions, the working classes and immigrant groups were left out, thus giving birth to a new form of entertainment, the amusement park. Coney Island, in particular…

Sixteen-year-old Steve is on trial for murder. But he's having trouble understanding why. "What did I do? I walked into a drugstore to look for some mints, and then I walked out. What was wrong with that? I didn't kill Mr. Nesbitt"(p. 140). Nothing is wrong with that, of course--unless the purpose of that casual trip was to give the "all clear" for a robbery that ended in the murder of the store's owner. Then, something is very wrong. Like his character, Walter Dean Myers grew up in New York. As a young man, he struggled with a speech impediment that caused many of his classmates and teachers to ridicule him and think him unintelligent. Myers often got into trouble at school and on the streets when trying to defend himself against the ridicule, causing many to label him a “Monster” (hence the name of his memoir), much like Steve Harmon was labeled a "monster." Later, while working as a construction worker, Myers decided to follow advice given to him by his high school writing teacher and began writing at night after work, just as the character Steve Harmon writes throughout the novel.…

Because the series revolves around the problems of the government, it is not very relatable for most members of the middle-class; yet the interactions that are found within the common workplace are displayed when the Parks Department employees discuss their work, co-workers, and personal lives. The fact that the show even delves into the characters’ personal matters shows that a connection is trying to be established between the viewers and the characters. Breakups, family, and new friendships are things that most people experience and can easily relate to. Knowing this, it can be said that the writers of the show are very aware of their audience and how they will react to the show’s plot, another element of Realism. Parks and Recreation inserts many current issues such as gay marriage, gotcha journalism, political affair scandals, sex education, obesity, and the role of women in politics into controversial circumstances. These topics are included in the show to spark conversation and interest on the subject. These issues, along with other events in the show, are conveyed in a highly comical manner. Councilman Dexhart’s sex scandal is completely shocking, as “when [the babysitter] was in the delivery room, [he] had sex with not one, but four nurses in a supply office…as well as a woman whose husband was getting a liver transplant” (“Christmas Scandal”). Although this is a satiric play on political scandals,…
