Rama, known as a lofty ruler and an ideal hero for common Indian people, is considered as the representative of upper caste people in the poem. Instead of glorifying him as a deity, hero, or king, the authors choose negative words when describing Rama and his deeds. For example, in the original story, the monkeys are described as Rama’s ally; they help Rama to defeat the demons. However, in the poem, it is Rama “enslaves” them, forms the army, and “wants” them to destroy Lanka for him. They become victims while Rama turns from an inviolable hero to a tyrant. The authors also offer a different interpretation to the beginning of Indian history. They say, “Once Aryans on their horses/ invaded this land/ And we who were natives/ became the displaced” (p. 653, line 10-14). In the poets’ version, the upper caste people are actually invaders while the oppressed people the real aboriginal inhabitants of the land. The invention of the caste system, according to the poets, is not derived from the division of the primal man but the invaders’ intention to keep their racial purity.…

Each difference is depicted in the characters Sita (from Ramayana), showing devotion and patience, and Ivan Ilych (from “The Death of Ivan Ilych), that shows pessimism and following the standards of society, each character representing two different parts of life.…

The early epic poem may have served to reinforce shared cultural values within a nation and provide a mythic history for a people. Ancient classical epics contain references to gods and magic and often feature a hero beset by mystical forces. Many later epics imitate these earlier works and may use similar literary conventions, depending on the culture. Early poems based on oral traditions are often called primary epics, while the later works are called secondary or literary epics. Almost everyone likes fame. Somewhere deep inside the heart everyone wants to be remembered and like everyone else even I am greedy for fame. But I don’t want to be remembered in this world for my wealth, business or success but for my values. I want to be successful but not at the cost of my values. Ever since I was a child my parents taught me some of the basic values of life. As I grew up I learnt more about values from my friends and especially my teachers. But the story that completely changed the way I thought about values was the Indian Epic called Ramayana. Prince Rama was the eldest of four sons and was to become king when his father retired from ruling. His stepmother, however, wanted to see her son Bharata, Rama's younger brother, become king. Remembering that the king had once promised to grant her any two wishes she desired, she demanded that Rama be banished and Bharata be crowned.…

    Essay on Ancient India

The complexities of religion verses culture have been debated throughout the ages. Having such a diverse religious population, India has seen many arguments, debates, and parliaments questioning originality of the religions, the origins, traditions, similarities and most of all the differences of South Asian people. In his essay, “Three Hundred Ramayanas”, AK Ramanujan explores the vast range of Ramayana tradition in South Asia. He argues that there is not one Ramayana, but a myriad throughout South Asia. Despite counterarguments by other scholars, Ramanujan’s essay reveals how diverse India is in its traditions and the fact that argument sparked over his piece of work exhibits this. Although these religions are geographically and somewhat culturally related through language, customs and heritage, these religions have grown to become unique and separate in their own spheres. To unify or clump them together as one would lead to confusion and mystification. The religions and traditions of South Asia cannot be categorized under the pretext of having the same beliefs and practices. Each religion and tradition, be it Sikh, Sufi (Islamic Mysticism), Hindu, Buddhist or Jain, has similar thematic elements, which when studied in greater detail allow us to differentiate the slighter details between them.…

What is a hero? In my opinion, I think a hero is a person who is admired for courage, his noble qualities, and a great warrior. Lord Rama was said to be the perfect being, as well as the perfect man, husband, brother, king, and obedient son. He is usually portrayed holding a bow and arrow, as an indicator that he is ready to fight off any evil or demons that he may come across or are put in his path. Along with his wife Sita, and his obedient brother Lakshmana, beside him. And one of his great disciples, Hanuman, bowing at his feet. Rama and Sita have been leaders and role models of character for many thousands of generations. To citizens of India and believers of the Hindu religion. Rama, the ancient idol of the heroic ages, the embodiment of truth, of morality, the ideal son, the ideal husband, and above all, the ideal king, this Rama has been presented before us by the great Sage Valmiki. Lord Rama is considered to have taken birth on the earth to destroy the evil forces of the age.…
