As of now all of the boys are heading on a downward path. Rameck is currently hurt after him and his friends got in a fight with some Arlington kid which got Rameck shot. He is now realizing he is struggling and needs to change his way of life. Sampson decided to go to Harlem for drugs and money but soon after comes to his senses and realizes it’s not the right path as well.
Although Rameck is willing to change he is lacking the effort. He silly strings his teacher which gets him suspended. This is where all three of the boys started to bond. Rameck realizes he should become a doctor and decides to chase after his dream with the assistance of his new 2 friends. I can relate to this because when I was younger I had friends who would always get me in trouble, I thought it was normal until they got the cops called on them for armed robbery. They find this challenging and Rameck is not used to the discipline involved with the program. Carla, who is the program director, realizes this and talks to Rameck about his behavior. The Physician dress code is applied upon them but they refuse to wear the clothes necessary. The boys protest and say they will dress the way their community is fashioned. They do not want to change who they are or compromise their culture. I personally didn’t expect for them to disobey the dress code and not want to get dressed up. I believe they should have because patients expect to see doctors dressed up, but I can refer to where the boys are coming from by not wanting to change their lifestyle. I believe you should have to follow the same procedure the rest of the class has. In life you won’t get to pick and choose how you live and work, so I’m glad the author throws in this universal truth about what you can and cannot do.
