“Rappers – I monkey flip them with the funky rhythm I be kickin’. Musician – inflict the composition” are the first words heard off of one of the most influential hip hop albums of all time. Nas’ debut album Illmatic is considered to be one of hip hops foundational documents and has earned itself a large number of awards, recognitions and record breakers. However, Illmatic was only the start of the icon known as Nas. Nas would go on to selling 7 U.S. platinum records, being featured numerous singles and becoming a household name for fans of hip hop. Nas is known for his intellectual rhyme flow, while being an outsider who rhymes about many things he has witnessed (Sewer 3). Besides being an iconic rap artist, Nas…
Representative and Senator John C. Calhoun, a Democrat who represented South Carolina’s 6th congressional district, was a good Congressman because he was a skilled orator and helped pass laws that promoted economic and national stability; however, his defense for slavery and support for the unconstitutional act of nullification proved to be dangerous to the Union. After being elected into the House of Representatives in 1810, he pushed for the war against Britain by drafting the war bill which Congress approved in June 1812. During his ardent efforts to assist in the war of 1812, Calhoun realized the need for stronger national defenses and began opposing troop reductions and started advocating for additional military service academies. He also promoted protective tariffs and…
Hip hop culture in general has nurtured a dualism within messages sent by lyrics. Nowhere was this duality more evident than the music of Tupac Shakur. As music reflected his reality and at times he’d reference women with derogatory terms, however he showed a level of responsibility with songs such as “Dear Mama” and “Brenda’s got a baby”. The lack of respect was noticed by many. Stress and the need to make a hit increased, he became a sex symbol along with a flock of “haters” trying to kill him. The flirtation with the materialistic trappings that the RAP game has to offer. “Forced laughter”(Shock-G), it was that Tupac was unhappy and this was speaks through his…
“What are Rappers Really Saying about the Police?” talks a lot about how the criminal justice system is unfair and biased based on who they are. The supportive details the authors gives would be when they give two examples of songs by Tupac and Jay-Z, then they give their opinion of what the songs meant. The conclusion is that they found the messages that were given was not that the rappers disliked the justice, however, they disliked the way it was being implemented.…
J Coles new album Forest Hills drive has the fire that could put him on the “throne” of rap. This new album of his clearly separates his new work from his old work going from a try hard main stream artist trying to please the music community on their taste of music instead of spilling his own sound kind of rapper, to a now self-pronounced “rap king” In his new album J Cole goes back way back to his childhood, life struggles ,relationships and reflecting on his life , as well as criticizing several other popular music figures from recent rap controversy’s , as well as working very well with other rappers in several of his songs that give his album a distinct touch that separates it from common rap albums that just talk about the fake rap life style or whatever the media wants to hear. Even though his album receives some negative comments and reviews. Hands down the way J Cole put together this album is sure to make his mentor Nas Proud.…
is pertinent to the goal. The Ice-T directed film, “Something From Nothing”, explores the perspectives and personalities of both present-day and early hip-hop pioneers. Ice-T gained, much deserved, respect when the film was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. In the documentary, release in the summer of 2012, Ice-T shows the birth of hip-hip by literally starting at the place that is credited with the dawn of hip-hop music, New York City. As the film goes on, Ice-T and his film crew make their way through all the major sites in hip-hip culture, such as Detroit, Los Angles, Compton, and Long Beach, California. The entire film is made up of interviews that are filmed on a location that is relevant to the artist, whether it be in their home, studio or a place that is integral to hip-hop. One notable question that Ice-T asks every artist is, “What advice would you give to an aspiring rapper or hip-hop artist?” The answers to this question vary greatly, observing the responses shows the theme of Ice-T’s message. Hip-hop as a culture is very diverse and rap as a musical art form is also very diverse in the sense that it means different things to different people.…
1. Who sang at the Grammy’s in Spanish in the late 1990s? What was the reaction?…
Henry Purcell offered us sadness with minor keys and happiness with major keys. I really do not have much experience nor really understand keys but, I think Purcell’s uses of the minor and major keys makes since because minor means low and unimportant and that is how you feel when ever you are sad. While, major stands for important and significant and when the feeling of happiness domains your spirit, you feel on top of the world. I think it was very effective his technique of key usage to make the audience feel sad or happy. If you hear a low key you feel depress, low energy, and sad and when you hear a major key blasting thru the auditorium I am sure it inspires you, put you in a happy mood.…

I listen to music every day of my life. From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep. My current mood determines what type of music I listen to. For example, in the morning, I like to start my day off with something slow and calm. This usually jazz music with its soft and mellow tones. Then later in the day, I prefer to listen to rap music. It really helps me get excited. This helps me when I am in the gym, especially the sound of the loud bass and tones. I tend to calm down after a long day of activities. I sooth my mood with slow, mellow, and calm music. This really helps my body and mind relax after a long day of work. In conclusion, Jazz, Rap, and R&B are very powerful different types of music, each having its own different style and background.…
Kids that do not have someone that provides moral support to depend on, tend to be more vulnerable to fall for the negative influence of the rock and rap violent lyrics. Kids that do not have a parental figure or an exemplary role model are being raised by the aggressive lyrics of rap or rock music. The fans that fall under the influence of the violent music lyrics are the ones that suffer the consequence and not the artists. The artist say, “It’s just entertainment,” when in reality “it‘s parenting.”(Moultry, P.J. (2007, Nov). Parents should control their kids on what type of music they listen to and explain what is right and wrong.…
Chapter 3 and chapter 16 "da joint and beyond" really caught my eye. Chapter 3 "gangsters-real and unreal" summarized the image of the "hood" and crime filled areas where people are regularly being robbed, shot, and killed. It also told how drugs came about and became a new indusry. It also became popular among musicians and soon became a way to employ young poor teens who lived in these "hoods". As many blacks are poor a lot of the hip hop lyrics began and still does focus on the distribution of drugs and crime in the streets. It sells because people who havent experienced it like to here how others lived and their stories and those who have experienced it like to relate to what they know and have been through.…
Have you ever listened to or overheard a rap song and thought about how vulgar it was and wonder how something like that ever made it to the public? Well if you think rap music has a negative influence on people, you're not alone. Since the late 1980's rap music has been called the Anti Christ in our culture, because of it's so-called influence in people's life. People swear up and down that the music is why people, especially the youth resort to violent crimes. Rap is defined as a style of popular music consisting of improvised rhymes performed to a rhythmic accompaniment. It didn't really become popular until the early 80's. Over the years it has become mainstream music, everyone is listening to it. In 1989 a local group called N.W.A.(Niggaz Wit Attitudes) came from out of L.A. and changed rap, which was the start of Gangsta Rap.…
Many consider Kendrick Lamar to be above beyond the talent of an average rapper; to others he is the bane of “quality” music. These two polarizing views can be attributed to a several different reasons; a generational gap, a shift in public thought, and the political atmosphere. Putting aside generational bias, while one might relate with Kendrick Lamar for his overarching message regarding race inequality, others might call it politically charged propaganda. Not so long ago the Beatles were considered the bane of quality music- described as “the devil’s music” by many before they were famous. Nonetheless, like all music, Kendrick’s unique composition of lyrics and melody can…
