In the early 80s and 90s, Rap music became an immense phenomenon. Rappers would make songs about the hood, police brutality, gang violence, black on black crime, and retaliation. In that era, the adults saw it as vulgar and useless, but the youth claimed it was their way of relieving stress and making their voice heard. It is no different from today’s music, although majority of artists these days are only interested in the lavish lifestyle that comes with the title and the lyricists in the current music scene are not as profound as Snoop Dog, Ice Cube or Tupac, they are using the ideas these artists created and made it their own. They are seen as the group of people who are creating terrible music to brainwash the new generation, but in fact their music eludes the emotions majority of the African American youth are feeling. The frustration, impatience, and uncaring demeanor shine through to their fans who refuse to give in to the pressures of society.
