RARE EARTH ELEMENTS
Nowadays, the civilization of the world has been moved forward to IT technology and advanced engineering technology. This means many people is using mobile devices, computers and televisions for social, wind turbines and advanced battery system for green energy, and so forth. The essential needs to make for those devices are the rare earth elements (REE) what are the fifteen lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium as defined by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Around 1950s, India, Brazil and South Africa were the leaders of the world’s REE production. But the Mountain Pass REEs mine from California took this status from 1960s to 1980s. However, China, today’s leader of the REEs production, has about 95 percentage of the world’s REE supply rate and is willing to overwarm in this market by selling finished goods instead of selling raw materials. It was obvious because of her enactment in 2010 which is restricting export rules for rare earth mantels. In this essay, I am going to analyse market structure, whether China has monopoly power or not in this types of business and how affect to the global market of finished goods such as flat-screen TV monitors.
First of all, the demand for the rare earth metals is huge which was estimated about 136100 tons in 2010. According to Industrial Minerals Company of Australia, the world’s REEs demand will increase to 185,000 tons in 2015 and the REEs production rate of China will be 75 percent which is approximately 140,000 tons. By seeing this production rate, it seem like China has a market source to be monopoly in REEs market area. China has this kind of power because of world’s REEs supply chain issue and geographic. Before now, Mountain Pass REEs mine from United State was produced a significant amount of REEs in order to fulfil the consumption rate from the world. But American government shut down this mine by a reason for environmental issue. Another factors are the areas where had REEs had been

There are many new products that have to be invented to serve new needs, and they can be made in the advanced countries because in fact the technology of production means you need very little labour input. I'm holding in my hand a simple that British Airways gives away to its passengers. It is made in Switzerland, a pen, a low-tech product, made in Switzerland, with the highest labour costs in the entire world, and British Airway, a Bristish company, having to pay in low value pounds, is buying from Switzerland a manufactured product. Now what's going on…

Minerals have aided in the continuous growth of developing nations and also, "had abundant mineral deposits that enabled them to industrialize" (Berg, 2013). However, as a consequence of industrialization, "these countries largely depleted their domestic reserves of minerals so that they must increasingly turn to developing countries" (Berg, 2013). Also, minerals affect the global economy. For example, China "controls more than…

Neon is the Element I’m interesting in. I choose to do neon because I found out the uses that are in our daily life. Neon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay in 1898 (England). Sir William Ramsay was a Scottish chemist who discovered it through the study of liquefied air. The name neon originates from the Greek word neos meaning new. Neon is the forth most abundant element in the universe. Neon is the element that allows you to watch TV, and without neon we would never see the cool flashing signs outside the bars, clubs, and restaurants. I’m going to tell you about neon’s uses, history, and facts. The largest use for Neon is in advertising signs. Neon is also used to make high voltage indicators. I’m going to give you the chemical breakdown of neon. Neon is on the periodic table, its atomic number is 10, protons, electrons are 10, 10 neutrons and its symbol is Ne. Neon is a noble gas. The period of neon is 2, and the group is 18. Neon is very rare on earth even though it’s very common element in the universe. In the earth's atmosphere, neon only comprises 0.0018 percent of the volume. On the earth, neon is always present as a gas. Neon has three stable isotopes, and it’s the second lightest noble gas, after helium. Two different types of neon are commonly used in the world. Neon glow lamps are tiny; they have been used as power on indicators. Neon is not a very common element, but the places it is most abundant is in the earth’s atmosphere, and trapped with in rocks in the earth’s crust. Neon signs operate at much higher voltages. Neon is not known to toxic, and it doesn’t have any stable compounds. Neon is just a light it’s an inert gas. Neon mixed with some other elements can make a bright light in an enclosed tube. When under low pressure, neon emits a bright orange-red glow if a small electric current is passed through it. It’s colorless but glows reddish orange electric discharge. Neon is an element classified as a noble gas which can be located in the…

However, to comply with the Dodd-Frank act is not without obstacles for companies such as Apple, Nokia, Samsung, HTC, LG, and Sony. To track the “3TG” materials (tungsten, tin, tantalum and gold) used in their products is a difficult and expensive process. According to Chris Bayer, an independent research consultant who specializes in conflict minerals, “There are these cultural or practicality issues that go beyond just the fact that Congo doesn’t have passable roads. There’s limitations or constraints wherever you look,” (as cited in Winsor, 2014). Furthermore, the minerals go through a variety of smelters, manufacturers and distributors in distant countries before they end up in a phone (Luckerson, 2014; see also Propper & Knight, 2013)…

The element Krypton is important in my ways. For example, without Krypton, light bulbs, electronic devices, etc. these things won’t exist. Krypton takes place mostly in buildings or stores such as ‘Home Depot’, ‘Apple’, ‘Verizon’, and in your home! This is because Krypton runs in electricity and can be found nearly everywhere. Krypton comes from Noble Gases and is also in the family from the Periodic Table. To be exact, Krypton is number 36 in the periodic table. The mass of Krypton is 83.798 and cost $33 for 100 grams. Because Krypton is a gas, then its element is non mental. Krypton is an important element because without it most of electrical objects won’t exist.…

In today’s world, uranium is at the forefront of many controversies such as nuclear power plant failures, such as in Tokyo, and the worry over nuclear bombs being developed in the Middle East and North Korea. As the second largest producer of uranium in the world, Canada must play an active role in discussions about uranium.
