Rasberry Crazy Ant Research Paper
The Rasberry Crazy Ant, also known as the Tawny Crazy Ant or Nylanderia Fulva, originated in the countries of southern Brazil and northern Argentina before the exotic species made it’s way into America, most likely by a cargo ship. The Rasberry Crazy Ant is a red brown, tenth of an inch, insect covered in tiny hairs that has the ability to excrete an acid that acts as an anctidote to Fire Ant venom. Due to their slow speed, which only allows them to travel about a tenth of a mile to half a mile per year, these insects have not spread far past the southeastern coast of America. Their speediest form of travel though is in trash or by people and animals. The ants also reproduce more quickly than other ant species because each colony contains multiple queens rather than just one. Since about 2013 the crazy ant has only made their home in over twenty counties in Texas and Florida as well as some spottings in Louisiana. The first record of these ants was in 1938, but they became better known in 2002 by Thomas Rasberry, an exterminator, hence their name. …show more content…
Crazy ants are attracted to sweet plants, such as honeydew. These insects tend to suck the hydration out of these plants causing them to dry out and die. These ants also can kill small animals or reptiles, like chicken or lizards, by biting them causing them to asphyxiate. These ants are also known to kill a majority of the reptiles and birds in the ecosystems they invade. Crazy ants have completely taken over the fire ant population in some areas which is negative towards an ecosystem because fire ants attribute to keeping other insect populations down. They have caused many pet owners to be more cautious when letting their pets

There are many theories as to why giant ants and moths don’t rule the world. Janet Fang’s research found that it was a chemical balance in hormones that prevent growth. She stated “Two mechanisms determine how big an animal gets: One controls growth rate, the other controls growth duration. The first commands how fast an animal grows and depends on insulin and similar hormones that prompt cells to divide and multiply. The latter regulates the timing of maturation using developmental hormones (like androgens and estrogens in people).” (Fang, 2014) There is also the common sense characteristics that would prevent growth such as their limiting exoskeleton or the lack of lungs to breathe enough oxygen because their trachea would not be able to process enough for a larger body to…

These two animals are prey items for a very wide array of animals. Bobwhite nests are commonly predated upon and this is why the nesting cover aspect of the habitat management is so important. First off I really hate ants and I never liked them, manly after being bit by several of them over the years; however, after watching the film I’ve learned to respect them. This was one of the aspects of the film I believe may not be as noticeable but I believe it’s important for building the plot of the story. Being that it’s about ants I’m sure like myself many others may not be too fond of them either. Therefore, if you get your audience feel some compassion towards those small insects more people will be compelled to watch the film, which is something that the screenwriters took into…

In 2012, 16259 people in the United States were murdered and another 1.8 million people were sent to the hospital due to assault. Humans resorting to violence and harming others is a daily occurrence, but why? Is it in our nature, are we instinctively violent, and why is it that these acts are not only happening in the United States but worldwide. Although the average person does not leave their home planning on harming somebody that day, under the right circumstances almost every single person in this world will commit an act of violence. Sometimes these acts are justified, such as when we are trying to protect ourselves or a loved one, but what about the smaller acts that we all do every day. Whether it is killing the spider you see crawling on the wall, or the bee flying around simply trying to do its job. We do not see these as acts of violence but in there essence they are. Why is it that our first instinct is to kill them when they are not causing us any harm? Howard Fast builds on this idea within the theme of his short story The Large Ant, where the narrator kills a creature that resembles an ant, purely out of instinct.…
