Understanding the Central Person
1. Santiago is driven to action by his resolve and determination to catch fish. After eighty-four days of being unsuccessful in catching a single fish and being deemed unlucky, Santiago continues to have patience and relies on his precision and skill driving him to continue.
2. Santiago continually tries his best and works hard to attempt to bring fish home with him even though he is not catching any; this shows the reader his patience, determination, and work ethic. The readers learn the most about Santiago whenever he talks about fishing or the sea as he talks with respect and resolve.

Santiago is always prepared as he fishes, stating that he believes that when he finally gets lucky he should be prepared because “preparedness coupled with luck is best”. The old fisherman says that he is not religious but as the chase continues but begins to pray and make promises of future prayer if he were to catch the fish.
8. The old man's relentlessness in attempting to catch the fish led him farther and farther out into the sea. Although he succeeded he soon realized that he had made a mistake and after fending off many sharks he begrudgingly accepted his foolishness. In this way Santiago matured understanding that he should not let his pride control him.
9. Although Santiago is strong and courageous soon becomes aware that he needs help quickly wishing that the boy could have been there. This insight was gained as he readied his skiff, finally accepting his old age. Near the end of the story Santiago is again enlightened by the fact that he travelled too far out to sea.

3. Manolin associates with two groups in the novel. Along with Pedrico and Martin, Manolin assists the old man with his work and looks up to him as a role model. The other group that Manolin belongs to is the fisherman, Manolin is one of the hundreds of fisherman that go out to sea everyday attempting to catch fish to make a living.
4. Manolin thinks of others, such as Santiago.
5. Manolin is a character with that feels empathetic towards others. He assists the old man because he knows what the old man is going through, even when he gets separated from Santiago’s boat, he still continuously goes out and helps him with whatever he needs. At the end of the story Manolin is overcome with so much relief that Santiago is alive. Manolin takes care of Santiago and feels for all the pain and suffering he went through.
6. The greatest weakness of Manolin is his ability to not let go from the past. Santiago is considered by the others to be on an unlucky boat, Manolin originally does not see this as a problem until his parents step in and pull him away from the unluckiness. Manolin has a chance to be with the lucky boat, a chance to make money and become wealthy, this is not what he wants though. It is his parents that force him to leave Santiago.
