The moral or message the author was trying to make was, to believe in yourself, and to believe in others and to never give up, even through loss or despair. Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz, is a story that takes place in Ipswich, and then moves on to lesser Malling. The main characters in the story are Matthew Freeman, Jayne Deverill, and Richard Cole. Matthew Freeman, is trying to break into a warehouse with his friend Kelvin late at night to steal electrical equipment, but are caught by the one security guard in the building. Matt is shocked and confesses, but Kelvin sneaks up behind the guard and stabs him in the back, leaving him to die. The main conflict or problem is Matt Freeman gets into trouble with the police, he's sent to be fostered in Yorkshire. It's not long before he senses there's something wrong with his guardian and with the whole village that he currently lives in (p.g. 27 & 28). In this story, Matthew is determined. During this time when he want’s to know what is going on in this little town that he is currently living in, he goes around asking people about it, but somehow they all die when he’s about to get his answer. He is also determined when, he and his “friend” Richard Cole go into a dinosaur exhibit and after the dinosaurs come alive, one falls and Richard gets trapped under its rib cage. Furthermore, Matthew is determined to get Richard out of there, but he can not before he gets taken by the demons. The other main conflict or problem is that,the witches of Lesser Malling are trying to open Raven’s Gate, and the witch's keep on trying to kill Matt, they succeeded in killing other people that know things that they don’t want Matthew to know(p.g 98).
