Raymond's Run
Toni Cade Bambara, born Miltona Mirkin Cade (March 25, 1939 – December 9, 1995) was an African-American author, documentary film-maker, social activist and college professor.

Raymond's Run" is Toni Cade Bambara's short story about a young girl named Hazel Elizabeth Deborah Parker and her brother Raymond. Raymond is mentally handicapped and Hazel is his self-proclaimed caretaker. The two of them both enter a race. Hazel ends up beating her main competition (Gretchen), and actually wins the race. She is proud to have won, but also proud of Raymond for making his first "run" as well. The story ends with Squeeky not only winning the race, but gaining respect for her rival and considering a myriad of other activities to pursue and conquer.
The story is set in Harlem, New York.n The time frame is one day in the life of Squeeky.
The tone of the story is bright, brave, a little arrogant. The vibrant idiomatic language and upbeat tempo, are compelling features of the story. The ability to capture, translate and play in and out of the voices and idioms of black communities has been widely admired.
The composition of a story is usual, all of the events going after each other. The climax of the story is then Squeaky saw her brother Raymond's run.
The narrator is Hazel, known in her neighborhood as “Squeaky,” a young black girl verging on adolescence.
I think the main conflict is an external conflict which is, Squeaky against Gretchen. Squeaky wants to prove and maintain her reputation as the best, and wants to show Gretchen that she's not afraid of her. She has something to prove, mainly because she is known as the fastest kid in town, and maybe also because Gretchen took her friends away from her, so she may be hurt about that and maybe wants to get revenge by beating Gretchen in the May Day race.

I also believe that there's an internal conflict when Squeaky is working on her breathing exercises (and Raymond is with her) and she sees Gretchen

Next, Finny and Gene have a huge rivalry going on that they don’t know about at first, and causes their friendship to change. One of the first clues that they have a rivalry is found when Gene makes Finny fall off of the tree. He did this because deep down he knew that Finny was better than him and he was jealous of Gene. Before that, Gene had compared himself to Finny, and didn’t like what he found. “I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with anything. I couldn’t help envying him a little, which was perfectly normal. There was no harm in envying even your best friend a little” (22). Also, Finny envies Gene for his smartness, showing that he is jealous of Gene. This shows that the rivalry between Finny and Gene is alive and active, even though later on Gene discover that it is actually more one sided.…

In reading James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” we hear a story about class and racial struggles, personal conflict, and redemption. We hear about loss and human emotion. We see this entire story set in nineteen fifty’s Harlem, which, for many American’s is the very picture of poor black culture and environment. The differences in poor black culture and poor white culture show many of the same themes and quirks. Both cultures often find solace in religion. Both cultures use music as a means of both expression and escape. Both often will drive people to also find escape through abuse of alcohol and drugs. People of both cultures will usually either take a high road or low road; either rise to the challenges presented by life, or wind up dead or in prison. What will be examined in this paper is that the uniqueness of black culture is often assumed, but not entirely accurate.…

In the past, there were direct discrimination toward African Americans such as police brutality and racial stereotype about African Americans. Policemen stopped the marching violently when they knew that those African Americans are protesting the rights they always deserve. People produced songs with lyrics like “if you are white, you are fine; if you are black, go back, go back”, and they published cartoons that had African Americans been drew in an ugly and terrifying way. Those are the dues African Americans have to pay, and they suffered all these terrible acts of the white people in order to survive in the United States. This film uses the unavoidable facts about the discriminations African Americans suffered to emphasize the big ideas that African Americans have done a lot of effort to gain their freedom should always be memorable by the people of the world.
