Holy the Firm by Annie Dillard, creates an analogy between Dillard as a writer and a burning moth. This moth flies into the candlelight while she is reading and Dillard simply watched the moth burn for two hours. Dillard asks herself questions while observing the dying moth such as “Had she been new, or old? Had she mated and laid her eggs, had she done her work?”. The last question examines the fact that the moth probably hasn’t finished her job in life much like Dillard hasn’t finished the necessary things in her life before she became a writer. The author later goes on to discuss that she asked people in her class, “Which of you want to give your lives and be writers?”. By saying “give your lives”, Dillard refers to the moth burning and…

At the start of “Raymond’s Run” we all notice just how protective Squeaky is. Part of that is because she has a tough life and takes care of her disabled brother Raymond. Squeaky doesn’t want to ta with you she’d “Much rather knock you down and take my chances.” Squeaky will fight you if you ask for it. Squeaky loves running, but she doesn’t settle for good- only the best- and only the first place medal. When Squeaky saw the girls coming down the block she said “They are steady coming up broadway and I see right away that it’s going to be one of those Dodge City scenes because the street ain’t that big and they’re close to the buildings as we are.” Which basically is a showdown. In “Raymonds Run” by Toni Cade Bambara, Squeaky is a very confident and kind person. When Squeaky explains the fifty yard dash, she says, “There’s no track meet that I don’t win”(289). This shows how Squeaky is round because Bambara gives a lot detail about who Squeaky is and how she is very confident about herself, but never thinks that anyone could be as good as her. At the end of the dash, Squeaky says, “I can retire and coach Raymond”(295). This determines that Squeaky is a dynamic person because she has grown to not think so much about herself and be kind and think how someone could be as good as her. In “Raymonds Run”, Toni Cade Bambara uses indirect characterization to show that Squeaky is a round and dynamic character.…
