After conducting my interviews I have a much more extensive knowledge of what the Cold War meant to families in that era. I surpassed what is constantly discussed in scholarly circles, and became indoctrinated it what was discussed at the dinner table. I interviewed Mr. and Mrs. Russ Philpot, Russ was born in 1943, and Mary was born in 1946. They both stated the Cold War was synonymous with fear. My third interview was Mr. Luis Rodda he was born in 1962; he provided good insight in to the Bay of Pigs. All three interviewees advised most their knowledge came from media, very little was covered in the schools, however all stated they performed emergency drills at schools. After combining all the notes from my interviews this is what I have been immersed in.
The Cold War began in 1945 and went through 1991. It was primarily over the nuclear arsenals amassed by the USA and the Soviet Union. This scared many Americans because we were targets of the bomb threats that would be dropped on them at any time. Families were building shelters and underground homes. Many in the US including government became preoccupied with satellite launches and accusing innocent people of spying.
The constant threats that came from war were difficult for Americans to live with. People were constantly looking over their shoulder; for not only bomb threats from the Russians but also from their own government who believed innocent people were in cahoots with the Soviets. Many people lost their lives working in the nuclear plants due to the effects of radiation. The US government had developed the montage of keeping up with the “Jones”. The dangers being placed on their own citizens was of little concern to them. The economy began to struggle because the Cold War was putting stress on so many countries that exports and imports began to slow, which was the demise of many companies. Then came the recession in the 80’s which Mr. Rodda believes caused the stay at home mom to go into the workplace. (L. Rodda personal communication, March 27, 2013)
Entire communities were terrified of the atomic bomb so they worked hard to build shelters and families practiced bomb drills instead of fire drills and a gas mask was part of daily routine. Family members traded necklaces in for dog tags in event of a bomb drop. Fear began to take over our American way of life. From building a shelter to carrying g a gas mask everywhere, the American people lived in a state of fear; the government escalated these fears as oppose to ease them. The recession also caused families to be on welfare and the government instituted the government food box. The box consisted of powdered cheese, dry milk, and real butter. “I can still taste that milk today it was terrible.”(M.Philpot, personal communication, March 27, 2013) The government had come out on several occasions and told us that real milk was tainted with radiation.
The cold war hardened our resolve as a nation, we learned about fear and the value of family. It taught us how to be prepared for anything.

Although the United States and the Soviet Union were both Allies who fought against the Axis power during WWII, they had really tense relationships towards the end of the war. The Cold War was the tension that existed from 1947 to 1991 after WWII between powers in the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc. Even though it seemed like an inner conflict between the US and the USSR, Cold War actually affected many other regions of the world, including Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Both countries Germany and Korea were impacted significantly by the Cold War conflicts.…

I first interviewed Raedah and my first question was “What words or phrases come to mind when you think of the term Cold War?” her answer was “ When I think of the term Cold War I think of guns and violence. Also slavery comes to mind because a lot of black people were forced into war. I think of the South because the war was between the North and South.” My second question was “Did you ever study the Cold War in school? If so, what are some aspects of the Cold War that you remember?” her answer was “maybe I did, I don’t really remember.” I didn’t ask her any questions after that because I knew she didn’t know much about Cold War. I personally blame the school for not teaching her about Cold War. Cold War was very important during 1960, that’s when A-bombs were developed by France. Soviet Union revealed that U.S. Spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory. During Cold War of 1960 John F. Kennedy was elected President of USA.…

During this time politically where the world was at a scare with the growing communist of surrounding countries change was exactly what we needed. Cuba was knocking on our back door and Russia in line to follow. This was a weary time for many Americans “Though World War II had come to an end with the defeat of Germany in 1945, the threat of a Cold War was already pressing upon the nation”. (S Curwick), 2002. The Cold War was something that Americans had fear of and wanted to stop it before it had ever started, 63% of Americans wanted to engage fighting against communists. Another threat during the cold war era was the ever so quickly approaching Vietnam War. It wasn’t very long after the beginning of the decade they started drafting service men and women to fight for our country. It was a scary thing for a lot of people just kids barely out of high school taken to fight, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Over 50,000 people enlisted for the war and over 11,000 killed in action were under the age 22 years old.…

The Cold War was by chance the most stressful part of the World’s history than anything else because it stretched across the entire globe and affected every country in one way or another. There are several reasons that the Cold War began and several different points that can be described as the beginning of the Cold War. By far the most influential part of the Cold War was the distrust that Joseph Stalin had between Winston Churchill and Harry Truman. The hostile relationship between the countries began when the Soviet Union would not open invade the Eastern part of Europe pushing Germany back and helping out the rest of the allies (Crash Course #39). The period of the Cold war began in 1945 following World War II after the defeat of Hitler, Germany and Japan. The Cold War wasn’t a one time event, rather it was a long period of fighting between the leadership of the Western World and Eastern Europe. The two countries known as superpowers led the charge with the Western side led by the USA and Eastern Europe led by the Soviet Union. Although once allies during World War II, mistrust with the leadership of Joseph Stalin and his leadership caused the USA to take a stand against the communist country. Although a war was never formally declared, the two super powers fought indirectly through proxy wars, space race, and arms race.…

The Cold War, a non-violent war between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, served as a period of great paranoia for many Americans and the rest of the world. On the brink of nuclear fallout, the world lied in the hands of the communist Soviet Union and the capitalist United States. The two countries emerged from World War II as the strongest nations in the world, but the stark differences in government and economics led to a bitter rivalry. Furthermore, Stalin’s aggressive plans to spread communism throughout the world opposed the U.S.’s values on freedom. The belligerent actions of the Soviet Union to force communism into weak democratic societies caused the United States and some Western European Nations to work to prevent the spread of communism.…

The Cold War was an almost 50-year long stretch of tense relations between the United States and the Communist-ruled Soviet Union. The Cold War started very quickly after World War II and finished with the 1991 destroying of the Berlin Wall and the disintegration of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The dread of Communism invasion in the U.S. government, media outlet and different associations influenced American legislative issues, culture, and even day by day life, especially in the early years of the Cold War. U.S. strategy toward Communism at the end of World War II fixated on control. This approach drove Americans to see Communism as a significant issue that must be held within proper limits on inaccessible shores.…

The Cold War was a five year war against the Soviet Union and the United States. These two Communist and Democratic countries had very different views and ways of ruling their citizens. One feared of expansion, the other feared of the opposing differences. However, they both agreed on keeping the war at a minimum by agreeing to not allow weapons of mass destruction to come into the war. Hint to the term "Cold War." Although there was not necessarily actual weapons being used during the war, both superpowers were however developing technology and using their nuclear power to build as many weapons as possible (Document 7). Some of the major causes of the Cold War were the creations of the Iron Curtain, Marshall Plan, and NATO, in which the United States tried to contain Communism.…
