Reaction Journal: “A Note to Parents” In the essay “A Note to Parents,” Ruben Navarrette, Jr. writes about the current parental issue on how the parents are approaching their children in supporting them. Ruben Navarrette, Jr. starts off his essay with his memories of home on how his grandfather managed to keep his five sons, including his father, away from kids who can be bad influences such as toying with switchblades and stealing. Now that the writer is getting ready to start a family, his concern is the thought that his children might get influenced by kids with a wrong education. Parents these days can be too merciful and request too little from their children. Being one of the reasons why the parents are trying to make up for their absence by giving cash to their kids and/or buying those things that they demand. The writer closes his essay with his thought that parents should “close their wallets, take 10 minutes,” to think further what they are really taking away from their children, they should be learning what it is to stay hungry for success.
The reading made me think about how my parents raised me and my brother. As a last child in my family, I was more advantaged than my older sibling in getting new things. Bu my mom always taught me the value of love, respect, and how hard she worked to gave me a better life thank my brother. By the time I was 18 years old, it was natural for me to accept the fact that I am in charge of my own expenses and no to depend on my parent’s wallet. It is true, that many parents nowadays are trying to make up for their busy schedule with money and expensive gifts for their kids. However, I agree with the writer that they should also think about what their children may be missing out when they easily can get all that they want from their parents. Children have to learn more valuable lesson of how hard they parents work to give them a better life, but they also have to learn to appreciate what their parents do for them.

The book’s main argument is that forcing you to reevaluate your thinking about parenting. It reveals new research that not only challenges modern-day parenting practices but also questions old practices as well. It is aiming to make you think about modern parenting styles at least twice. It isn’t following the latest parenting trends; it is analyzing and deconstructing them. It isn’t proposing the “new, correct and only” way to parent; it gives you the research and helps you navigate the mixed messages. The book investigates common misconceptions seen in modern parenting practices, and in children’s education more generally. I’ll try to summarize book’s arguments which are served in ten chapters. In chapter one, they are focusing on the inverse power of praise. The argument of this chapter is that false…

The 1920s American family was criticized by writers, who were eager to blame them for the downfall of the youth back then. Many older generations do the same thing today. They see the split families and blame the free lifestyle of the teens on the fact that they have no supervision while being bounced between dual households and situations where single parents are working leaving them home alone. The Literary Digest summarized a survey on the younger generation as in need of parental authority. That is also said of today’s youth. There is not an adult around that would disagree on this issue.…

Parents always wanted their children to receive better lives than they do, they work hard, trying to give their next generation the best they get. It’s impossible for parents to watch their young adult children, whom should have been economically independent, suffer from pressure or depression of life and would thus take care of their life expenses when they are victims of the high unemployment rate due to globalization.…

The problem with the role of children before the 1920s was that “children were viewed somewhat as little adults” (“Life”). Instead of going to school, children were expected to be working. Additionally, “in 1900, 18 percent of all American workers were under the age of 16” (“Labor”). For the majority of families in 2017, “children are expected to follow the leadership of their parents” (“Roles”). Instead of working, children now go to school to prepare for a productive adulthood. Another role of children is to honor their parents (Deffinbaugh). Consequently, children learning to honor their parents will help society later because the children will honor other people in future relationships. Children’s roles in society were once helpful for everyone except the children, but slowly over the Twentieth Century, their roles have become beneficial for them, while still helping…

According to the film, it seems that the U.S influence in a lot of different ways. They influence us in terms of speech, sense of style and clothing, food we eat, the movies we watch and even how we think and decide. Our government does not give attention in our education, from colonial education to neo education means to maintain the control of U.S in our education. They want us learn based only on their books, they are making the young ones like robotic children “don’t ask just learn”. Children cannot think, decide or express their feelings.…

The usage of most advanced large-scale bread manufacturing facility that is fully automated and computer controlled, untouched by human hands of Gardenia in their conversion cycle is the most remarkable in their system. As I have personally seen how the machines process all the ingredients to ensure the quality and freshness of their products, I could really say that the company had used well the technology available to give them the best advantage in their industry. I have also seen how their workers ensure quality control by checking any deformed loaf of bread ahead of the process and then putting a sign on it – a pink paper in their case – to notify the person in charge to remove it before the packing stage. I have had this impression that maybe the reason why defective breads were not being removed at an earlier stage of the process is because these breads undergo joint processing with non-defective breads and will later be used for further processing in order to be sold as one of the by-product of the company. I have been informed that one example of the company’s by-product is fish feeds.…

WOW! After the symposium, I realized how lucky I am to be in a concrete house, not worrying if the strong wind will take it with all its might; to live in a more comfortable house with comfortable clothes on. The movie Apollo13 is great but little kind of boring. Tom Hanks is a great artist! He is my idol. One of his great movie is Forrest Gump. By the way, The Apollo13 is America’s third moon landing mission. En route, an onboard explosion deprives their spacecraft of most of its oxygen supply and electric power, forcing NASA's flight controllers to abort the Moon landing, and turning the mission into a struggle to get the three men home safely. I thought Jim’s wife was his mother. Cause, look to old for me. Just kidding, Well done!…

One note, this movie is not for the faint of heart. There are graphic depictions of violence and even torture. The opening few scenes depict some episodes from Rizal's novels. In one a Catholic priest rapes a Filipina. I guess I now know where the Mestizo mixed blood class came from in the Philippines. In the other scene a Catholic priest beats a child for alleged stealing. Strong stuff and it made me wonder how the Catholic Church could possibly retain any power in the country, if this is what the national hero thought about it. The movie tells the life story of Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines. A three hour epic movie on the life and struggles of his poet and patriotisms. It covers his life from his childhood to his execution at the hands of the Spanish forces occupying the Philippines in the late 19th century. We are also thrown into the world of Rizal's novels filmed in black and white, so we get a glimpse of how he viewed Filipino society under the Spanish heal. The film also through a series of flashback showing Rizal as a genius, a writer, a doctor, an artist, a lover, a friend, a brother and a son, thus giving a rich texture of Rizal’s character. The movie introduces us to the life of subjugation of the Filipino people under the rule of the Spanish friars. From the execution of three Filipino priests in 1872 for alleged subversion to the harsh and unequal treatment of Filipino students in the schools, this film is a stinging indictment of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. I also commend the film for its bravery in showing the evil tyranny of the Catholic Church during that time. Considering that the Philippines is a Catholic nation that is like butchering a sacred cow but alas, Abaya works her magic in depicting the suffering of the Filipinos because of the friars. This is by far the best Filipino movie that I have seen so far. I would urge anyone…
