3rd SONA
Last Monday, July 23, 2012, President Noynoy delivered his 3rd SONA. There, he mentioned a number of achievements and accomplishments during his term, namely economic growth, political accomplishments and some other things he wants to achieve in the remainder of his term.
In PNoy’s speech, he detailed information regarding economic growth, decrease in unemployment, higher foreign direct investments and rising tourism. This is in fact very good news for us. Again, our country has made another step in eradicating/decreasing poverty, which is one of the main problems here. This also leads to higher GDP and an increase in the value of Philipine Peso. If our country is able to maintain this steady growth for about a few years, then maybe we can raise the standard of living here, along with the decrease of overpriced goods such as basic commodities and etc.
Another thing that PNoy mentioned was the quick passage of the sin tax bill. The sin tax will be used to curb up the vice as well as increase the funding of health programs. Actually, this is a good idea, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone, it can help lessen people who smoke, drink, and other people who can’t control their vices and it can also help people who badly need health benefits from the government. Adding sin tax to cigarettes and liquor can help, but I think they should also try adding it to bottled drinks and junk foods. Consuming bottled drinks and junk foods is not bad, but the plastic is bad for the environment, and some people just don’t care whether they throw their garbage properly or not.
He also promised to build sufficient infrastructure before the end of his term in 2016. This includes construction and improvement of about 15 airports across the nation, the connection of NLEX and SLEX, construction of bus terminals, and the addition of about 66,800 classrooms. Construction of facilities like this can help ease
